And the rest of the story, 300 yards - the Delta Wolf 25 with Slugs šŸŒā€¦!

When Iā€™ve had a chance this week Iā€™ve been working towards getting my Delta wolf on paper at 200 250Ā 300ā€¦With both pelletsĀ and slugs.

200 and 250 with pellets

250 and 300 with slugs.

Iā€™ve only shot at 300 once. That was with my 177 red wolf. It was a lot of work to find the paper. Iā€™ll explain why.

Iā€™m shooting on a flat through a Corredor in the woods that Iā€™ve cut out to 300 yards. Thereā€™s a couple feet of snow,Ā quite a bit of it fresh. You get absolutely zero feedback from your shot. Iā€™m shooting from about 5 feet inside the room out through the window. The mirageĀ is much better when I move the bench back. But it is still extremely difficult. And I canā€™t see my impact. I canā€™t see it if I hit the paper, I canā€™t see it if I donā€™t hit the paper.

Today I decided I really wanted to get out to 300 yards with the slugs. So first I had to get on the approximately 4ā€™ x 4ā€™ paper at 250. I was using and testing two different weights of slugs while I was trying to get on paper. I like to complicate things. The heavier slugs point of impact was a good foot and a half below the lighter slugs. May not seem like much, but when youā€™re trying to hit a 4 ft.Ā² piece of paper at 2:50 or 300 itā€™s interesting.

So I finally got on paper at 2:50 which wasnā€™t too bad. And then I shot a couple of groups that really intrigued me. I was still able to hold on my reticleĀ at 2:50. (For some reason when I say 250 it thinks Iā€™m saying 2:50 in the afternoon. Iā€™m going to quit fixing it each time). So you would think going from 2:50 to 300 would be pretty easy, right? Not so much.

remember I have to walk 300 yards across the creek uphill in both directions. And it was 2Ā° below zero when I started this morning. It took me three round trip walks, before I got it on paper. I was able to figure it out because I noticed some shots hitting short in the snow while I walked up to the target. They were hitting about 20 yards short.

To get on the 4 x 4 target area what Iā€™m calling ā€œon paperā€, at 300 yards, I had to hold the reticleĀ significantly over the point of impact. I would guess about 5-6Ā feet šŸ¦¶. Keep in mind again I canā€™t see where Iā€™m hitting on any of my shots. Thereā€™s too much mirageĀ to see the holesĀ inĀ the paper.

I finally was able to get three slugsĀ out of five on the paperā€¦Way down on the bottom. The other two mustā€™ve been short. Finally!!!

I bring paper andĀ a stapler with me whenever I walk out. I had enough time left in the day to shoot two more groups. They are posted below. I was going to walk out and check them out after I shot. And I thought to myself why not just finish that group I already had three shots in. The one way at the bottom of the target. I like to test things. SoĀ I shot the two shotsā€¦They felt really goodā€¦ So I grabbed one more slug šŸŒĀ and sent it down range. Iā€™m sure youā€™ve seen the resultant three shot group by now. Itā€™s down below also.

To shoot all the targets at 300, I had to hold way over the target back stop on the very bottom of my retical. So it felt like I was balancing the bottom of my reticleĀ on a specific branch ofĀ the tree above the target. That was my holdĀ point or a point of aim. Remember I was dropping 5 to 6 feet below the bottom of my reticle. I did not want to change to lower magnification. Cant becomesĀ a huge issue in this scenario.

iā€™m sure you figured out by now, I donā€™t have a magic scope. Iā€™m going to put one of my bigger March 34 mm tube scopes on. The mount already has droop built-in. And Iā€™m going to shim the scope in addition. I want to be able to get on the reticle at 300 yards. I have a ways to go, especially if I plan to use 60 X. None of this stuff is easy. I know there areĀ other guys have already done it.

The targets are all marked below at the yardage I shot them. If you look at the targets youā€™ll see interesting things. They tend to have three or four shots that are grouped fairly close together with anĀ outlier. That tells me that the rifle is shooting better thanĀ the group size would indicate. Especially in the conditions I was shooting. Iā€™m referring to the mirage,Ā the wind was actually quite nice.

I had a long ass week. I was actually skipping across the snow in anticipation of going to check out the groups I had shot. I like that a lot. This fires me up.

The Delta Wolf is one heck of a platform. I watched the built-in chronograph for 20 shots in a row. There was one 927, and one 931. Those were the extremes. The rest were all 928 929 or 930. That blew my mind. As Iā€™ve mentioned before, there is absolutely nothing like the electronic trigger. Iā€™ve mentioned it before on my red wolf.

Stay tuned, itā€™s just starting to get fun.

Forgive me, but it is nice to see something other than "nice perfectly round holes" when shooting at 100 to 300 yards. With pellet OR slug.

The ballistics... yes, the ballistics... (smile)

There have been posts in the past that claimed 300 yards and even with slugs, the "perfectly round holes" made me wince. No, they made me think fraud.

It appears that some of your pellets/slugs turned before hitting the target? Some up and some down...???

I found your observation interesting. I took another look at the holes. One caveat, my target backstop is not even. Some areas might be somewhat curved. Itā€™s a bunch of logs onĀ end. I do look for signs of sideways pellets etc. exactly as you are when I go up face-to-face.

what I just realized after looking at the holes again, is that the edges are somewhat blurred. If you shoot slugs at 100 yards, they punch out a perfect hole. 200 same in good conditions. Today at 2:50 they were still cutting nice holes. I always thought that was a function of velocity. Now I think itā€™s a sign that the slugĀ is starting to lose it concentricity ofĀ flight. Obviously itā€™s still has it,Ā but itā€™s starting to fail.

The holes in the paper, and I use horrible paper just bulk printing paper at 300, kind of look more like pelletĀ holes. Like they punched through the paper instead of Cut through.

Well, since I have never shot pellets nor slugs out of an air rifle at 300 yards, I guess I must defer my comments.

However, the ballistics show clearly that the projectile WILL be coming into the target like a basketball into a hoop.

When I don't see that, or indications of that in the targets, I have to wonder...

Of course, I could be wrong... (smile)

Again, going back to your comments. I took another look at the 300 yardĀ groups.

Look at the impression on the paper. Thatā€™s the hollow point diameter. The point hit and pushed its way through. Obviously there was no log immediately behind the paper.

Apparently you find this interesting, when thereā€™s no chipmunks to shoot. Hope youā€™re doing well.

I left the pictures full-size.

The picture below, two slugs hit right on top of each other. You can see the impact from the piece that sheared off on the upper right. This was at 300. Still plenty of energy.

This is what it looks like through the objective. The video is only 27 seconds. You can also see the MirageĀ I am shooting in.

https://vimeo.com/682252007

The pictures below her to give you perspective before you watch the video. The bottom picture is from further back. If you look just above the crosshairs andĀ a little bit to the right, you will notice a three pronged tree šŸŒ³ that has been cut off at the top. IĀ use that as my point of aim, I line it up with theĀ very very bottom of the reticle. As you will notice both in the video, and my picture below.

if anyone can calculate how far my slug šŸŒ Is dropping at 300 yards with a 2 inch scope height, I would appreciate it. Iā€™m going to guess 16 feet.

The top picture is blurry, because when you turn it up to 25X, the mirage starts snapping.

Just this morning a dozen at 300 yards. One really high two dropped a bit low, and the rest all fit in an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper.

I mustā€™ve held wrong somehow on the high shot, nothing else makes sense.

You can see I hit on the right hand side of the targets, I was holding on the left edge. I would guess the wind was around 3-4Ā miles per hour

Thatā€™s excellent shooting Mike!!! I need to get out to the range again but the wind has been a biatch for weeks nowā€¦..thatā€™s my excuse and Iā€™m sticking to it. šŸ˜…

BTW try the 34.9Ā grain NSA if you have a chance, they have significantly higher BC or a little over 20% better, even at lower speed they have less wind drift and group tighter at extra long distances. I had no issues even in wind shooting 4-5 inch groups at 300Ā yards but 3 inch/MOAĀ groupĀ have eluded me so far. In the NSA lineup the 34.9Ā and 38.9Ā grain have the highest potential to be nutty accurate thanks to really high BC without going into over 40 grains, even the .22 40 grain slugs barely have the same BC as the 38.9Ā grain .25 slugs which are easier to push than the .22 40 grain slugs by good amount.Ā

at 300 meters with 5mph crosswind the 34.9 grain has 3.5Ā inchesĀ or 1 MOA less wind drift, itā€™s pretty significant.Ā

Flintsack.

I knew from your reactions withĀ delight atĀ how theĀ Delta Wolf was performing while you were here shooting last month that there would be some good things coming down the road. And that was just using the limited supply/variety of pellets that you got from AOA and those that I had on hand. The combination of that rifle and your shooting skills were making some pretty impressive groups at 100. Well, actually 109 or soĀ I think because pretty sure those far target stands are 100 meters at Rio not 100 yards. I shouldn't be surprised that you are already on paper at these new distances. There were some sub MOA groups last month which for Rio is very impressive. Especially for not knowing the winds at a difficult venue to shoot. Not that you will get tired of this rifle any too soon but as with many of theĀ rifles in myĀ collection that I have bought from you, keep me at the top of your list for hand me downsĀ if/when you so choose to move onto another project!!!! Just think, if you can get your reticle into the picture of projectile impact, those chippiesĀ will become extinct in your countyšŸ˜ Wish I had your drive and determination to push the limits!!

Thx

Dan

That's amazing! Sure is low ES!

Darn I can't catch a calm day that is warm enough to shoot long range.

Those 29gr fly very good, just have a low BC is all, so wind pushes em A lot, but they do well as you found out. When I tried these at 300Y the slightest puff would move the POI 3" and the group would be 8" or more wide in what seemed like near perfect conditions.

Great shooting there Mike, I'm sure it was fun!
