I've been married about 3 years. I started out voluntarily telling her, and she hit the roof. She's a saver, I'm a spender. So I agree 100% to what addertooth said.
We finally got tired of fighting and decided to split everything up. She wants to put every last penny into her son's 529b account for college, then make extra mortgage payments, then redo the kitchen and bathroom, etc.
I want to pay the bills, put a reasonable amount into retirement, kids' college, etc, then have some play money for airguns and vacation. Only way for us to stay married is to have separate accounts.
In the interim, what I've been doing is selling one (for $300) and buying one. (for $1,000) Then, if she saw the new gun come in, I could tell her it replaces the one I shipped out last week. If she doesn't see it come in, fine. (encouraged, even!) But I make sure she sees the old ones going out.
The NP2 I just bought, I was so proud of the price, I told her voluntarily again. ($116) She's still not impressed, since I have "too many guns."
