Alkin safety valve question.

I don't have the auto shut off version of the W31. Mine is manual.
When topping off or filling tanks, as it approaches 4500 the safety valve hisses and then pops. I know that's what it's supposed to do, but should i be shutting it off before it pops or is it okay to let it do so?

@GA_LeadHead I generally shut mine down around 300 bar, but have waited to approach 310 bar and the burst disc popped open on a few occasions. No big deal to me if I’m right there and can turn off the compressor, close the SCBA tank valve, and decompress the fill line. I don’t suggest relying on it to operate as a failsafe in lieu of the auto shutoff feature. If in doubt, call an Alkin rep and ask what to do in order to be sure you are operating your unit correctly.

I dont own an Alkin but i do own a Max-Air 35 (Coltri) and I wouldn’t intentionally trust my safety valve to release at 4500. When I bought the compressor I was told the safety valve was set for 4500. Never had it that high as I generally fill to 4350 and call it good. At what pressure does it release? If it’s kicking open at 4350, that’s 300 BAR- that’s about right. I’m sure you could adjust it upwards if needed (consult your manual/vendor first), but since you have a compressor that last 100-150 psi probably isn’t a deal breaker since you’re not driving somewhere to get your tank filled. Also remember, the lower the pressure, the less wear on your compressor over time. If it was me I’d be standing there ready to shut it down at 4350. Just my two cents worth….
