Alaskan morning coffee visitor

I was sitting at the dining room table enjoying the first coffee of the day and reading the manual of my new chronograph and this guy showed up in the back yard... Although visitors are not too frequent, you never know who or what is going to show up. We have had moose, fox, wolf, coyote, snowshoe hares, ermin, black bears and grizzly bears over the years. Always puts a smile on my face and piques my pups interest. This guy looked pretty healthy, might have to go for a hike and look for his sheds! What kind of backyard visitors have you guys had recently?

Sweet! Not much moving around here. 3 feet of snow has the deer all holed up, but we have a cottontail that lives under our porch that left tracks in all the dog paths I snowblow in the yard. Had a grey squirrel running around in the woodline but he went into hiding when I grabbed the Bandit. Heck even the flock of starlings (that for some reason is sticking around this winter) has been silent today.

Great videos and pictures. I'd love to know what your dog is thinking in that last picture!

Ha, my wife and I say that constantly. She alerted us to him outside with some low growls, but as soon as she knew we were watching she just sat staring at him. Most animals she sees in the yard she barks at, but moose get a low growl or two and bears just get a locked up point with a paw up and tail straight out just like she's pointing a grouse or ptarmigan...

The last visitor I had was a black bear near my porch. That was back in the fall though. I don’t count the squirrels because they are all the time.

We get bears like clockwork as soon as most of the snow is gone in the spring and they come around off an on most of the summer and again in the fall on their way back up the mountain to their dens. We do get small red pine squirrels that I forgot to mention too but here in Alaska you have to salvage either the meat or fur so I end up only shooting one or two a year for some fly tying materials. They are too small and don't taste all that good to eat.

Great photos and video! I had a possum visit our compost bucket last night. This week I saw some large kitty prints in the creek bed.

That would be a cool one to see. We had lots of Mt Lions around when I was stationed in South Dakota, but there are none according to fish and game here in Alaska. There has been a report of a sighting or two over the years up here though... We get Lynx quite often and I got to see a huge one a few weeks ago sneaking through the woods above my house. He was gone by the time I grabbed the camera.

Cottontail this morning when walking the dog. He couldn't see it over the snow (thank goodness as he is a mini doxy and goes insane when he sees other animals in "his" yard). He could smell it and kept sitting up on his hind legs and peering over the snow banks- but bunny was smart and did not move!. As for the snow total- well we have had almost no snow either this year. Had a foot at Christmas but all melted down. This weekend we got nailed with the dreaded lake effect. 3 foot in 2 days. Going out snowshoeing this morning with the wife. We have not been on our shoes all season so this will be fun. We normally workout daily and average 4 or 5 miles- so this hike will be a long one (we are right next to a 40 acre hay field so probably twice around), and we get near a swamp area that usually hides some deer and what not. Hopefully some pictures will follow...

Thanks for sharing the video. Your dog obviously knows her limitations with the bear; she points for you to go get them!

AirNGasman, that looks like a target rich environment! Love it!

Stoti, I am in South Central Alaska. I have traveled to most of the far extremes of Alaska and none of it has disappointed yet! 😉

Stefanjan, since I posted this we got about 5 inches of new snow, so it is not quite as depressing as it has been. Hoping we got lots more than that up at our cabin!
