I havent seen much around a new product called the Airgun Target System so I will provide my first impressions on it. I was looking for a replacement for my backyard duct seal target I have and to alleviate the mess its creating and the culling of pellets from it while ensuring its quiet when impacted by pellets.
I usually dont write reviews but the Airgun Target System looks like it will work really well for the backyard shooter. I initially saw it on Rick Rehm (Shooter1721) Facebook page which sparked my interest. I am all for giving the local guys a chance so I contacted the owner and found out he was only a few states over from me, and since I was going to be in his area for business I asked if I could stop by and take a look at it before I purchased. Steve is a really nice guy and down to earth person and an airgunner. He showed me the product without hesitation and even let be test fire his airgun into a panel at his 25 yard backyard range and after seeing the product and the quality I decided to purchase one and give it a try.
I have to say these things are heavy and built like tanks. Also they are all weather because he has them sprayed with a plastic liner similar to the ones used on a truck bed. I got the ¾ inch thick, long version. Steve said ¾ inch would be best for my HP Red Wolf .22 which is roughly producing 55 ft/lbs. The next day I had the chance to experiment with it and pellets do not penetrate the material at 25 yrds. Even when I did pellet on pellet groups roughly 20 pellets in two areas they just piled on one another (damn it was windy that day) and didn’t go through. The material he uses just sucks them in and they stay there. I noticed its just as quiet as shooting into duct seal which is a big plus. I wouldn’t recommend it for slow traveling steel BB because it could ricochet but for pellets it did its job. Also since its all weather I can just leave it outside without worry about it falling apart. Steve said after a while the pellets will pile up a bit and you can just brush them off or leave them there and they will fall out on their own so you can put a tray at the bottom to catch them. Its not cheap but what quality product is and I think its good value for the money? Steve did tell me about the material used and the ballistic fabric which is imbedded in it but I will be honest that went over my head. If your interested I would reach out to him via facebook , search for Airgun Target Systems. He said they are working on a webpage which will go live shortly. I says its worth it for the basement and backyard shooter. He did tell me he is testing another panel for big bores and higher caliber airguns as they are currently rated for .25 and below.
Here are some pics.
