Airgun production numbers?

How big is our sport?

How many airguns does a manufacturer produce of each model? Obviously, it would depend on demand but for example, how many Wildcats did FX produce this year? Or maybe a better question, how many Bobcats? (Because they have been out longer)

I have no idea of the number of airguns produced on a yearly basis. Just trying to get an idea. Is it 100 of a model? 1,000 or 10,000.

That's an interesting question. We had a similar talk the other day. I thought that Crosman would be the dominant sales leader world wide. My thinking is all the outlets, big box stores, small hardware ,gunshops, and computer sales. There are a lot of inexpensive guns that are readily available. On the other hand take FX, one high end gun can equate to better than 50 entry level guns from Crosman. I think maybe 45 or 50 years ago Daisy maybe led the list. Hope someone in the know chimes in. Same for pellets JSB, RWS, or Crosman.

I often wonder the same. I.e. the FX Indy I bought last November has serial number 37939 - does that mean that many Indy's have been sold (sounds way too much) or FX guns regardless of the model (sounds reasonable)? Could also be just a unique number w/o a direct link to the number of guns produced. Dunno.

We can apply some estimation techniques to arrive at a rough number, but of course if someone in the know chimes in - that would be great.

Edit: [clarification]

I think that Crosman is still the Gorilla in the room. They sell a BUNCH of guns across the full spectrum. There aren't many people who can afford FX guns. Their cheapest guns are far out of my price range. That's just volume though. I'm sure that FX is still very profitable. The FX guns probably only cost a bit more than a Marauder to manufacture, but they command a HUGE profit margin in comparison. When asked about Apple's anaemic share of the PC market Steve Jobs said he'd rather be number 5 and insanely profitable than number 1 and only break-even. FX makes sexy guns that are also REALLY good. They can command a higher price as a luxury item. Crosman probably refurbishes more Marauders than FX even builds.

I think the the original question spans broader than just FX. I think the OP is asking as an industry all together and then broken down per company per gun?

either way, it is an interesting question. I'm sure there would have to be some kind of sales and manufacturing figures somewhere publicly right? Not necessarily profit, but just numbers on units made and distributed

Actually, I am wondering about production numbers from most of the major players but I am specifically interested in FX. I read somewhere that only a few Impacts were made and provided to specific testers (Ted, Tom, etc). I'm just wondering about production numbers when they get ramped up. How long will it take to satisfy the current pre-orders and when will they be available to the General Airgun populace?

I'm relatively new to airguns, outside of my 50 years ago BB guns. I have a .25 Marauder and a .22 Discovery for about a year now. Love them both but I'm looking for my first FX.

Come on, Someone out out there knows. :)

I can think of NO (nada, zilch & none) manufacturer that applies a number that means, or is decipherable, to Joe Public. I'm excluding hand-built guns here (the likes of Whiscombes).

We should take into account several issues -

high value stock (guns) that can sit in a shop awaiting a buyer for months if not years

sales information that competitors could use

ability to change certain elements of the guns' design/manufacture on an 'ongoing' learning path

& finally :)

The good old WWW - stuffed full of nosey, nerdy 'experts' (myself included) who know it all (much better than any maker).
