Airgun classifieds

For years I did nothing but USPS money orders for my online buying and selling from private parties. I would always take the MO to my credit union for cashing. It usually went smoothly without question,, then one time the teller said "I have to call and verify that this MO is authentic"... she waited on the phone for quite a while before someone could answer her. From that point on when I needed to cash a MO I started going to the PO. A couple times,, depending on the amount of the MO, I was told the PO didn't have the cash on hand to cover the cashing. It became a disappointing experience and that's when I chose to go PayPal and have no regrets to this point.

PayPal is convenient. As a seller, a US postal MO is safe. Get the MO, deposit it and then send the item out. I recently sold an Anschütz 2002CA to a gentleman and he used a MO to pay. It was in my hands and in the bank 3 days later. A week later he had the rifle in his. I don’t do a lot of buying and selling but EVERY time I send my money to a private party, I have doubts unless I have dealt with them before or I am familiar with their online forum personality. I most ALWAYS like a personal phone call to get a “feel” for a person. PP is quick and easy but with the right person a MO isn’t unreasonable to me. Either way there is risk involved.

My very small rural PO while good at give personalized service because we are on a first name basis, most days could not cash a $200 MO. I can call a day in advance and they will have the cash waiting for me. One advantage of PP is my customers can pay via debit or cc WITHOUT having a PP account if I invoice them. I don't do enough business to justify the fees of a cc service.

Hi John, your comment that Postal Money Orders can not be faked in no longer correct. Last year I received a Postal Money Order for a gun and it just did not look right. So I took it to my local Post Office and it was a fake. Fortunately I had not shipped the gun. When I use Paypal I transfer the money I receive to my bank before I ship. I assume that Paypal can not remove the money from my bank without my approval. I have been buying and selling antique guns, firearms and airguns for the past 7 or 8 years and I have never had a scammer problem until last year and this year.

Kpaoletti, PayPal can take your money back. It is one trick, it was known for a while on eBay.

Buyer sends you money and politely asks to ship to his wife, GF or some other address.

He has a nice story, he spends half a year North, half a year South, his account registered at his North location, but now it's under construction and he is staying down South...

After a week or so, he submits claim he didn't receive an item.

Paypal asks you to submit tracking number.... and tells you: wait a moment

What is that? Guy lives in NH, why the hell did you ship something to FL....

You are out of gun and money...

I’ll use PayPal for smaller amounts of money, 400.00 or less when buying from a member but if I’m selling a Airgun or PB for that matter I will only do a Certified check from bank, I’ll then take it to my bank and when it clears( so far they have cleared right away) I’ll will then email buyer and let them know, then I’ll take package to UPS and take care of shipping, Insurance and signature required, then I will email buyer with Tracking number and I will also track package and stay in touch with buyer untill they receive package.

I have done this with all my higher valued weapons and it works just fine, I’ve never had a issue in years of doing this and of course some are shipped to FFL dealers and then I just get there number to verify they are legit and I also call and talk to them to make sure they are aware of pending transactions with buyer. No one has ever had a issue with me doing it this way because it covers both of us and they like the extra measures I take to make it a positive sale.

Anytime I have bought a more expensive Airgun from a member I’ll only do a certified bank check from my bank and mail it to them, sure it takes a few extra days but then everything is tracked and accounted for, most of my airguns are purchased right from dealers. I’ve never really liked PayPal but I’m starting to trust it more in a way but I should also add that the account I use for PayPal only has a small amount of money in it so when I do use PayPal I normally need to go to the bank and put the money in the account to cover the transaction that way if someone does get into my account they wount get but a couple bucks.

Everyone has a story. I got burned by PayPal and ebay after selling with them for years. I wouldn't use either to buy or sell, but that's just me. If you haven't had a bad experience with PayPal then I'm sure you would swear by them...but when you do, (when not if) USPS money order is still the safest money transaction between strangers. Just make sure you understand how they work and what your rights are (buyer and seller) using them. When I buy from any of the airgun dealers like AOA , or Airgun Depot, Pyramyd, the day your money order arrives they ship your stuff. They unstand how safe they are or they would hold your order till it clears. And the guys that take PayPal but ask for Friends and family payment......buyer beware. One of the most dangerous ways to pay.

Naturally I meant a fake will NOT be honored and can be I.D.d in seconds.

You can buy as many as you like ( $500 per).

I picked them up at P.O. and as I do have a bank I have the P.O> verify it is good as Gold then deposit it if needed. IF it's bogus the P.O. will tell you in seconds. They will even verify it over the phone if you like.

Speaking with the misses we ( I ) DID use paypal once, set up an acount just for one company as thats what they wanted.

Anyone get there Filarms yet? Did paypal return $60,000 between all parties? Heck no that (Filarms) account which had multipal Police reports submitted stayed online for years.

Not a single Whiscombe owner on this thread. I'm certain of that.

You can delegate authority, not responsibility.

Agreed, PayPal is convenient, but user beware. My first account was closed a few years ago because the word Maduro was used. The word referred to the color of a wallet, but it also refers to a cigar leaf. PP assumed the latter and closed my account with "funds" already posted. Long story short, I lost those funds due to account closure for the use of the word maduro. The transaction was deemed a tobacco purchase, a real no-no on PP. I now have a new account that has been opened for a while, I encourage those who send me money not to mention ANYTHING and I transfer the money to my bank account immediately upon receipt should the rules change......

Why is Pay Pal friends and family not protected from scammers ? About a year ago got taken by Joseph Lamonica ( aka justkuz) for 405 bucks . Am still madder than hornet.

If I'm not mistaken, it's because friends and family transfers have no fees. If PayPal doesn't get any payment, they don't offer any protection services. Please correct me if this is wrong. Just what I've always understood top be the case.

You are correct....no fee...no protection Anyone that is willing to send a total stranger unprotected funds in this day and age would have to be considered foolish I would think.

At the moment PayPal is experiencing a computer problem. I have a sale pending. PP shows that the funds have been transferred to me but they are currently unable to transfer the $ to my bank. They say it's a temporary problem but I won't ship until I see that the bank transfer has taken place. This is my first use of PP as a seller. Not very confidence inspiring.

Paypal saved me 875 bucks a month or so ago when i bought a Wildcat .25 from a guy in California. He asked for F&F only and I said no and paid him his asking price plus the 3.5 percent and immediately got an email from him saying that he was not shipping the product and I should ask for my money back. I told him he could just refund me (sometimes crap happens, I get it) but he said no. He wouldn't even contact PayPal to let them know that he didn't ship so I had to wait 10 days for him to not respond. Paypal gave me my money back no problem. I will NEVER buy another thing without using goods and services through paypal (or cash in hand of course). Its just not worth it.
