So when I try to insert the .218 24.8 grain NSAs…it is very tough to do so. It requires a bit of effort to close the lever. Why is this? It’s not as difficult when shooting 23 grain NSAs, but still more effort required than I‘d like. Please let me know.

Did you try measuring them? They may be bigger than .218, or maybe they have a longer contact surface that you have to push into the barrel.

It is .218

But even the .2165 23 grains fit roughly into the breech…it’s strange. I can’t seem to find out why.

The barrel has a.215 groove diameter. Get some AVS slugs and you'll be very happy.

Yes he's shooting a liberty not an avenger but they use the same barrel.

What I've read indicates the Avenger barrel is choked, but the Liberty barrel is not. If the AVS get you MOA or better in an Avenger let us know.

I have only tried the tiny 17.5g Nielsens in 22Cal in my Avenger. There is some resistance when closing the lever when compared to a pellet, but not really excessive. I assume this is either because the breech end of the barrel is choke/tapered or the slug is engaging the start of the rifling. And if the lighter slugs you mention are shorter, or a slightly different profile they might not be engaging as early.

Have you ever pushed a slug through the barrel and measured it? That will tell you whether or not it's choked which I don't believe it is and also the groove diameter. It's the only way to be sure.

For what it’s worth, the barrel of my .22 Avenger is NOT choked.
