Air Venturi 4500 Compressor (non Nomad)

do any folks here have experience with these? https://www.pyramydair.com/product/refurbished-air-venturi-air-compressor-electric-4500-psi-310-bar?a=7768

with the 20% off refurb deal going on right now you can now snag a REFURB for $1k.

i'm more inclined to purchase refurb vs new air venturi/hatsan products because they have been looked through. but still not sure if its worth $1k, or if i should stick to my portable air cooled GX compressor, and save up for a Coltri or something.

or would a hill ec be a better option at this price point?

I bought a refurbished one a little over two years ago. The only problem I've had was a water pump replacement. It's performance is adequate, when plinking at home it charges cylinders , bottles faster than I can empty them. It charges my 98cf tank with ease. My reasoning was cost and figuring it's been gone over with fine tooth comb. I change and replace filters as specified, treat your machine right and it will treat you right.

that sounds like bad news for my bank account

I have an AV 4500. Well, actually, Air Venturi currently has my compressor again. For the second time. After it was returned to me the first time, I switched over to Nuvi 455 synthetic compressor oil, and prior to that, I was using synthetic compressor oil. just not as fancy. I was extremely diligent with operation, starting it with valves open, changing the oil frequently, and filling to 4350 instead of 4500. Still, my compressor has been back to Ohio twice

The first time it went back, Air Venturi made me pay shipping to them-$150. Second ride to them, they gave me a return label. Air Venturi service has been more than fair and professional, but it's at least a two month round trip process. After the first return, I got a Yong Heng as back-up to hold me through. I shoot daily and there's no dive shops anywhere close by. The first two Yong Heng's were also defective, but I've got a good one now that has served its backup role well.

Ultimately, the AV4500 is a Chinese compressor with stateside support and a warranty. That seems to be about 50/50 odds with a solid plan B backup.

After the first AV4500 failure, I also started saving for an Alkin. After the second failure, I bought the Alkin. What a difference.

If I could do it all over again, I would have gone with a Coltri or Alkin from the beginning. I've spent a lot of my time and money learning things I didn't necessarily want to know. I thought at $1500, I was getting a compressor that would last for years with regular use. Some people have had those experiences with the AV4500. I have a few guns, and a few of those few are big bore. I use more than an average amount of air, and I live in a rural location without a close dive shop. I use my compressor to fill 60 minute tanks and I fill multiple times a week.

I haven't decided what I will do with the AV4500 when it comes back, but selling it as refurbished is certainly a possibility.

kendive - i bit the bullet, and plan to treat it like a yong heng lol. bought an auto off outlet switch that i will set to 20 minutes or so, in case i forget to drain, or stop to let it cool down periodically

tn_yankee - still going on! go directly to https://www.pyramydair.com/used-air-guns

mtndragon - thank you for the real world feedback. i will use my GX2 as back up if i ever need to send it back, and will argue til no end that they cover shipping costs lol.

i shoot quite a bit, but only go through a 98 cuft tank once a week or so, so hopefully mine lasts longer and i didnt make another expensive mistake

Great let us know how it goes... :)

I have the Air Venturi 4500 Compressor, I bought it new a year ago. I have run it to filing a couple of 74 cu ft air tanks. It takes under 30 min to fill both tanks when I run the compressor. So the compressor has run about a total of about 12 hours this last year, and I fill to 4500 psi.The only problem I have had was the batteries for the digital temp gauge had to be replaced but that had no effect on the compressor running. I have seen mixed reviews on this compressor but I have not had any issues with it, I might be one of the lucky ones.

$1k is a sizeable chunk towards the Coltri or Alkin.

I wouldn't buy the AV 4500 unless it had atleast several years warranty and only if the seller pays round trip shipping every time it breaks in writing as part of the warranty.

Do they have a good supply of parts to rebuild it at any time?

I would just suffer hand pumping till I saved up for either Alkin or Coltri definitely not the cheaper Day State version.

Only Chinese compressor I would buy temporarily and they might work temporarily if you lucky is one with a 4 or 5 year warranty or protection plan as an umbrella warranty.

5 year warranty doesn't apply to Benjamin brand compressors unfortunately.

On the fence for the Hill compressor just waiting for long term reviews don't know product support and parts availability either.

Hearing even the Yong Hengs failing early is disturbing too.

If some one smart can build a compressor housing so I can mount my hand pump inside that would do.

i created a new thread to update, but this one has now gotten brought back up.

my refurb compressor shipped with a filter that was most likely installed by the previous owner, soaking in oil, previous owner also installed a metal spike into the filter to make retrieval easier. i was pretty unhappy as this refurb compressor was obviously not looked through.

i spun it up, and a LARGE amount of air was just shooting out of one of the heads. it still built pressure, but about as fast as the GX CS2 that I already had. this went straight back to pyramyd. i would NEVER buy a refurb compressor from them. if they even did a simple check of the filter, they would've seen they shipped me something that had never been looked through by their certification team. what a waste of time.

i bit the bullet on a hill ec 3000 after. kept it at 10 minute run times. after 1 hour of total use, the first stage piston fell apart. i think i got particularly unlucky with the hill, but I definitely throw the hill compressors in the same boat as the chinese ones. just as prone to breaking, and not made for heavy use.

my GX CS2 has been my most reliable compressor, at less than $400, i've got 45 hours of run time on it, with 2 years left on my Asurion warranty.

i've got a Tuxing with built in water reservoir / double water oil separator on the way now with an Asurion 4 year, which feels much safer than buying from Pyramyd. i've had luck with Asurion in the past, easy straight forward process.

and to batman2's point, yes, i'm a 1/3 of the way to an Alkin or Coltri, but with my current income I really can't justify $3.5k vs $1.2k, even if I can save up for it eventually. i'll take my chances, and put the $2k towards the new siding for the house fund.
