Air Tank Question

I have an Omega 75 tank. I have been looking around for tanks. I came across this and wonder if any of you have purchased anything like this. I plan to ask for a quote. There is an air cylinder place in town and I plan to ask them also. This tank only weight 150 lbs so it isn't to bad. It may be out of my comfort level on price but I don't know.

f you are going to buy or rent a big heavy tank, you're better off getting one rated for 6000 psi like a nitrogen tank. Why get a big tank that starts giving your partial fills on your 4500 psi Omega tank after the first fill? It's the same problem that someone has if they use a 3000 psi steel scuba tank to fill their 3000 psi airguns. After the first fill, you are no longer getting full fills in the cylinder you're refilling.

It's much easier to use a compressor to fill your Omega instead of dealing with a heavy 4500 storage tank. Think of a compressor as an infinite sized storage tank.

I wouldn't mind one or two of those as I have a AlkinW31E.

I don't know on the prices for Nuvair, SCBAS, Northshore, etc. but yes people definitely use the cascade system. It's better on the compressor also to run longer than short starts/stops little SCBA 30-45-60 minute tanks.

Unless someone is running a retail business like a paintball field, why would individual users want both a heavy duty compressor and a bank of cascade tanks? It's overkill. I fill a 6.8 liter tank with an Alkin in 6--8 minutes of total run time at most twice a month. The extra wear and tear from offs is negligible and better than running it for hours to fill a cascade system then letting it sit idle for months while using the air in the cascade tanks. A compressor that isn't used causes much more damage than high pressure top off runs. Lack of lubrication and moisture corrosion from sitting idle is worse than running a compressor. Alkins are very robust and don't even break a sweat on a top off. They are rated to fill to 5000 psi. I like to refill for friends just to keep my compressor in good condition.

What equipment would you advise for filling a tank to 6000psi?

I have only seen a company or two who specialises in Gas boosting going past 6000psi. An Altaros booster on steroids if you will.

I don't see the practicality of any heavy bulk storage tank or cascade system for a single user with a high output home compressor. As an alternative to a compressor, some people do opt for nitrogen tank rentals for the moisture free gas they provide, the higher tank transfer capacity that 6000 psi provides, and to avoid mechanical concerns of operating a compressor. A compressor eliminates the need for extra bulk storage tanks for any single user. 

A dive shop, paintball shop, or paintball field dealing with lots of people in a short time frame are the reason to have a cascade system or bulk storage tank in conjunction with a compressor.

@ Humdinger, you are probably right. I don't need a big bottle. I would like to run my compressor a little longer at a time. I shoot my 75 down to about 200 bar then top off to 310 I would like to run my Alkin a little longer. I could always buy another carbon tank and fill them at the same time. I can's get over the price of the carbon bottles. 



@JamesD one time I helped build a 12 cylinder rack with a manifold like the one you mentioned.
