Air Compressor Pumping out oil?

Hey all,

I have a Yong Heng (sp?) Air pump that after a little modification works pretty well. I use it to fill my large carbon fiber bottle, but only let it run 10 minutes or so at a time, and never over 65 degrees Celsius. Yesterday after filling my Air Venturi Avenger and bleeding the bottle valve, I notices a very strong oil smell. Has anyone had issues with these compressors leaking oil into the air supply?

Yes, if you go with the cotton filters or minimal filtration you will get the oil smell. Way worse with some oils than others. Don’t skimp on your filters or oil and it will not smell so bad. 

Also if you got the "Simple" model, bad idea, Then you have no filtration on the compressor at all. So, lots more water and oil going into your guns and tanks.

You can fix this with an upgrade of parts for your compressor from aliexpress if it is your problem.

Else you would need to pay quite a bit more for a much better aftermarket filter.

I just changed over to the Seco Lube 500 Synthetic oil and it doesn't have much of a smell to it to begin with. It is really the proper oil for these high compression compressors as well. Although I have used the Husky branded synthetic compressor oil for several years without a problem. It's really not the proper oil.

On the overheat problem you can put a jug of ice in your reservoir and a fan blowing through the back of the compressor and it will run much longer before it gets hot.

Me I installed a computer radiator and three fans on mine. That and an eight inch fan blowing through the back means it never gets hot. I ran it for over twenty minutes without going over my 60C limit.

Thank you for the reply and advice. I'll definitely be looking into the upgrades! I'm hoping that since I've only tipped my bug bottle off twice there won't be a large amount residual oil inside.

Do I need to worry about any negative effects of oil finding its way into my rifles?

What oil are you using? The Royal purple is a bit pricey but it really is great oil. Amazon has it in quarts. Good luck!

I honestly don't remember exactly what oil I put in it, but I'm sure it's synthetic, since that's all I have around this place.

I'm also looking at an in-line oil/water separator.

What oil are you using? The Royal purple is a bit pricey but it really is great oil. Amazon has it in quarts. Good luck!

Don't use Royal Purple. I found out the hard way that it will detonate and destroy pistons. Seco Lube 500 is the way to go because it has the highest flashpoint you'll find without going to higher viscosity. If the oil is out of stock at the link I supplied above it will be in stock again soon.
