Aim small miss small

Today I got out with the Wildcat .25 to do some shooting. I has done verifying my zero and noticed a sparrow in the 80 yard tree. I am shooting JSB 25gr pellets ( I know I didn't note the .39 haha). I checked the adjustment for the wind that I guess was 10mph. I held my hold overs and touched off the Wildcat. ThaaaWack... sparrow was DRT. 80 YARDS... I couldn't believe it, and in the wind. Sorry no photos but I wanted to share more about the FX Wildcat.

People get too hung up on pictures and movies. When I hunt I am HUNTING not making a photo essay although there are some here that are extremely good at it...I am not.

I do enjoy the videos others post and wish I could do it but I guess I am more single minded.

I hear you T3PRanch, Thanks, like I say I was a bit surprised I was able to make the shot. I have enough going on just to try and make a good shot.

Scott, I am still working on the ranches near here and will keep you informed, also I went over to get a fill up on the tank and he told me that he has a squirrel problem and wants me to help him out. I will find out if it is just a couple or a bunch and let you know.

You know, I've found that when I make a video of it, I get more knowledge out of each kill. I can replay it in slo-mo and see exactly what happened. Check my shot on the chipmunk from today. In full speed, with one viewing, what do you see? Only that it flips and runs off and dies in less than 20 seconds. Replayed in slo-mo, I could hear the meat slap, see which way he flipped, see him shimmy on the tree, etc. Things happen INCREDIBLY fast. I like the camera to slow it down.

The earlier one, where I shot the squirrel through the arm & chest, it again happened too fast to see it. But in 8x slo-mo, we can see the pellet hit home, the blood spot, and the splash of bird seed behind, indicating a pass-through.

I've actually MISSED a few shots because I was setting up the camera and the quarry ran off. But since it's my back yard, I know it'll be back; it might just cost me a few more cents in seed by the time I catch up with them.

I do enjoy watching good videos with clean as possible terminating shots. The slow motion shots are very interesting and I agree one can make adjustments if needed after watching videos. Keep sharing those videos Smaug

A sparrow at 80y. I smile and whistle for a day with a house sparrow smack at 50y. That is very good shooting! Good job LNielsen.

Great job! As for the title "aim small miss small" I fully agree. I like to have my magnification as low as possible as it makes me nervous having the crosshairs wandering all over the place. Up to 50 yards, I mostly shoot at 3-6x and up to 100 yards, I like having my scope at no more than 10x (mostly 10x because of the "true mildot" setting although I still confirm my range with a Nikon Aculon range finder). The crosshairs of the MH10 reticle on my Optisan EVX 3-12x44 are very thin so even with low magnification, very precise aiming is not an issue. On my Raven 6-24x50, the mildot reticle has thicker crosshairs but I still prefer low magnification for a bigger sight picture. 

It would be an interesting thread for itself to hear what magnification setting people prefer for which distances. For a rock steady Benchrest - sure, go 24x and higher. That´s the best way to really aim dead center each and every time but for hunting... not really. Not for me, at least.

Thanks Scott, I took a still from video. I really appreciate very much your suggestions and thoughts. The other gun I was going to get would have been nice but I think this is a much better choice for me. The more I shoot this gun the more I love it. I ordered 10,500 pellets (sounds better than 30 tins).

Thanks Monkeyshine, Just setup the camcorder to video shots. I used SDellinger's setup and it works great because I can look through the scope like normal and video cam is attached to top of scope.

Thanks Pope_on_Dope, I use a FFP scope and magnification does not affect calculation of drop as you already know. I do like myself 14 power with my Athlon Argos scope, it works great for me.
