this setting and others all around it gave me 40.7fps with the RD's @at a 4.5k fill...

what else should i try for the 45.8fpe goal ?

5.5 turns is max on my gun

I just ordered a Air Venturi Avenger .22 this is all I can afford. Is it good enough to enter computation ? I know I would enjoy the computation win or lose But I would like a shooting chance. Your thoughts Bill Kasley Florida res…

Reply:

I have two Avengers - a .177 and a .22. They are both very accurate. I've used the .177 in Field Target and the .22 in 25 meter benchrest. In benchrest you will find the gun extremely accurate once - like all benchrest guns - it is stabilized with proper stands or sandbags. I initially used a pair of Caldwell sand bags and shot respectfully. With a Sinclair benchrest stabilizing it, I shot a 720 score. I used JSB Exact Heavy pellets. It might not beat the Steyrs and RAW HM1000s, but it is fun to compete with.

But the guns are very light in the stock and thus very front (muzzle) heavy, especially with a moderator. So when shooting off-hand or kneeling in Field Target, it is quite difficult to hold the crosshairs on target. No issues when using a bipod or other means of supporting the fore end. I considered adding 1-2 lbs of weight in the stock to better balance the gun for field target. (Instead I got a used Daystate for my target shooting).

I especially love the guns for helping me learn how adjustments in hammer spring, regulator pressure, and reservoir pressure impact the speed and accuracy of various pellets. However, I find the guns achieve plateau velocity (google search "sterne tuning regulated pcp" to learn more about this) even with 0 to 1 turns on the hammer spring. So I am considering putting in a lighter spring to get more fps range and higher shot count from the hammer spring adjustment. Also I want to work on making the trigger more sensitive.

If you bought one with the wood stock, it has baffles and a better barrel stabilizer at the front of the shroud. Also the new one has a better poppet valve. At least that's what I hear. When I took mine out of the box I saw that the probe o-ring was cut almost in half before I even took one shot! I fired off an email to the technicians at air Venturi and they sent me two more o-rings gratis.

Being on social insecurity, and seeing there was no baffles I improvised with a homemade barrel stabilizer and four baffles. I plan on drilling some vents in the shroud to allow for air stripping but I haven't gotten around to doing that yet in case I need to send it back. I'll probably get the Donnie FL model a70 adapter in the near future. I noticed there's a couple hundred PSI dripped on the regulator especially when you have it filled to over 4,000 but it's not so bad when you're at 3600. There are plenty of guys with experience talking about how to fix that part because it needs to be much smoother and they left it with the machining marks.

I've been watching James on YouTube called All about air guns. He has shown there are some problems with the magazine and has eliminated the bolt probe o-rings. I ordered some actual Benjamin magazines because they are better tolerances. The standard magazines cause the pellets to can't off-center a little bit and that will make your groups wider.

I Detuned mine to about 1800 PSI on the regulator and backed off the hammer spring to about a half a turn. At that setting I can use field Target trophies and hit golf balls all day at 50 yards. Then I tried using the terminators which weigh a little bit more and I turned the hammer spring in one turn and got the same kind of accuracy at 50 yards.

I did play with the power on the regulator near maxed out and with the hammer spring about four turns to shoot some Beast 34 grain and then some slugs. I was only using my backyard at 20 yards so I don't know about grouping those at longer ranges but it definitely has some power when you Crank it up.

Compared to the Hatsan flash I got a few years ago, this is much better machine work. The safety on the flash will give you a bloody thumb and I have a small bungee cord holding the bolt closed because it would pop open and every shot. So now you have a nice safety and a nice side lever so it's much smoother operating. You don't have to remove the stock to change the hammer spring setting and now you have a regulator so you'll have more consistent shots instead of a lousy bell curve. The volume of air is almost the same but now you're at 4,000 PSI versus 2,900. Consistent shots and almost three times as many.

awesome video, very imformative...thank you !!

i pre-ordered mine in .22 about 4 weeks ago.
I've probably watched Steve's / @AEAC tuning guide, accuracy test videos and everything I can find on this gun several times each. With that said, in his video linked below starting at the 17:10 mark he talks about the first batch making it through customs and folks would be able to get their hands on one soon. So let's skip forward a few years and talk about the upcoming Avenge-X. Yet again I've watched and read everything that I can find on this new series and I can't wait to place my order. So you guys that have been in this hobby a while and like @gendoc mentions above he pre-ordered his Avenger, anybody remember how early they started pre-orders? Is there a way to get on a notification list for the pre-orders for the Avenge-X?
