Nailed him. Almost every raccoon I’ve shot did the long dance. I wonder why raccoon’s do that, has anyone ever nailed one that just laid there after the shot? I’ve shot over thirty and none dropped stone dead, always the long dance. Don’t mean to be gross, just wondering what other folks have experienced when brain shooting raccoons. They don’t get far but it seems pretty hard to shut them off like you can a squirrel.

All I've eliminated did the death dance, some over 1 min even with perfect brain shots. You can tell if it was an instant death if right after they are shot there isn't any movement at all for about 1 to 2 seconds then the dance happens. In all my cases the front legs don't really move just the back half of the body. If the front legs move it was a brain miss and they may walk off with a bad wound.

This is with .25 pellets, Maybe someone can chime it on what happens if you shoot a coon with a expanding rifle bullet with over 1500 FPE in the brain.

I’ve shot them with everything in the airgun world except a big bore. It doesn’t matter what you’re using, it takes the exact same shot placement or they say see ya and take off. I will say that you should avoid the between the eyes head on shots when the animal is looking at you with pellets under 18gr. I also can tell by the way they fall off the tree if they are going to be able to gather themselves up and run off. I’ve said it before, I’m glad raccoons aren’t larger than they are. If they were it would take a deer rifle to put them down. I don’t think I’ve ever had one fall stone dead. When you dead short one, they must have a backup system that sends a signal that says RUN!! Unfortunately nothing else is working properly.

When I was growing up, a long time ago, I had an uncle who coon hunted to pay for the food for his coon dogs. He sold the skins. Occasionally we'd get to go along. Mom's hated it because we would fall in creeks and come back very dirty. But it was fun. He'd shoot them with a 22 rimfire to get them to fall and the dogs would finish them off. He liked it if they fought a little, made the dogs chase the next one harder.

Good shot. I've had squirrels "do the dance" with neck shots - that must have clipped the spine.
