Acquired a hammer 50 cal keep or move along

I like mine. It's pretty loud though. 

My scope is set far enough back that my face isn't over the breech. I barely notice the air puff that folks make a huge deal of--I don't think many of the nay sayers have actually shot the hammer. Just don't stick your hand or face near the breech, pretty simple concept. 

When shooting off bags, I tend to take the front handguard off. Notice it's more consistent--one of these days I'll make/print a different design for the front foregrip with maybe a barrel band built into it. Not a fan of the handguard design, if you couldn't tell. 

The 4500 fill isn't ideal, but for those 2-3 shots it's darn consistent. Most big bore shooters I've seen generally only shoot the same number of shots within a certain small pressure range for consistency...but yes, 3600ish max fill on most others, I get it. 

Pros and cons to everything--I'd say shoot the heck out of it for a bit to see how you like it.

That puff makes all the difference!

My 50 cal Texan will do 3 shots over 700fpe from a tank similar size as the Hammer at 3625psi and the Hammer barely does two shots from 4500psi holding 700fpe. Thats a lot of wasted air solely for the fast repeat of shot number two.

If you really need a fast second shot at that power, maybe you need more reange time?

I've had 2 of them, the second is still back at Umarex waiting for them to decide if I was right about a problem. If it was cheap, keep it. If you can get good money for it, I might think about an AEA 50 cal. I want to like the Hammer, but so far haven't even been able to shoot either of the two that I touched. I have several molds for ammo, one of which cost $150 so I really want one that works.



I had two thoughts about the sights.

#1 was to use a dot sight which I have here.

#2 was that I bought a "muzzle loader" scope with a 6 inch eye relief.

Between those two options I think I can prevent getting a black eye. I also made a muzzle brake, but of course this is still untested.

I haven’t owned but have been down the review rabbit hole. I personally own a AF .457 carbine cf and an AF Texan .50, I love them both and would never even think of trading of selling. They are just so darn accurate and reliable! Plus an added bonus is Airforce customer service team are the best I’ve ever dealt with! Amazing. I’ve heard umarex customer service can be iffy. I pondered buying one but the blast of air from the receiver was a deal breaker for me.

i'm one of the select few that really likes the hammer.

i have my share of texan's but to me the hammer works best hunting deer and hogs

from blinds or stalking. i'm also left handed so the puff of air is not noticed at all.

1st 2 shots are very consistent and accurate within seconds if needed without loosing your 

field of view....big plus right there when hog hunting !! would buy another if i needed to.

I have that Lee 450 grain mold, it's for the 50-70. I also need to check my .510 sizing die, it tended to smear the lead on these when trying to size down, it's a pretty big squeeze from .515 to .510. The smearing ended up with flakes of lead in the grease grooves and a big fin off the back that needed to be trimmed. I'm probably going to polish my sizer, it does not have the nicest surface finish, also to open it up half a thousandth. I'll probably do the same for the .512 die I bought, polish closer to .513 and do a 2 step size if I end up using this 50-70 bullet.



Also the Hammer is really .511, the .510 slide right out of the magazine, at least on the two I had here. You could size to 510, then powder coat and be right in the ballpark. Maybe a tumble lube would also help them stay in the magazine.



Here is a picture of that 450gr round next to an Umarex 550 and a Lee REAL 320gr
