A Ted's Hold over inspired hunt!

I was able to escape for a couple hours this afternoon to a new farm that I just got permission to hunt for pigeons, this spot is awesome and reminds me of a few of Ted's video's ... one in particular with very tall silos and hungry kitty's!
Long story short ...when I arrived I was greeted by the land owner who is a a real salts of the earth kind of guy and I really enjoy talking with him, we talked about my FX Independence .22 and he was very impressed with my last shooting session and also with how quiet, powerful and accurate my rifle was he even told me that he was so impressed by not only my marksmanship skills but also my general behavior around his building and live stock that he was going to mention it to surrounding farmers on my behalf and give them my number!!
What a great feeling that is to be not only allowed to hunt here but actually truly welcomed here!

I was able to harvest 7 Pigeons and a dozen or so sparrows today but three of the pigeons were claimed by the hungry kitty's today and I don't mind that at all, as Master Ted himself so gracefully states in more then a few of his awesome videos ....the kitty's got to eat to!

I am so blessed to be back in this sport and also to have found a great community with you all to share our stories together!

If you don't mind sharing what are all of the steps that you took to be so professional. I live about 30 minutes from a bunch of farms and have always considered about hunting there. I would like to try and get some ideas about how to go with doing so.

Thanks folks ...Mark it's pretty easy actually just treat them with respect
A few things that I have always done are as follows
-I never have camouflage clothing on the day I ask for permission
-I always introduce myself to the land owner starting with my full name and where I live ....I am trying to gain a trust factor here and letting them know where I live and who I am shows them that I am going to be accountable for my actions
-I tell them exactly what I would like to harvest and what I will do with what I harvest
-I explain that I am trained and proficient with what ever firearms I wish to use there and also that safety while on there property is paramount
-I provide other references if asked
-I always leave them a paper with my name adress phone number and make model and plate of my vehicle
Weather they allow me to hunt there or not I always thank them for there time in talking to me ...there busy and I appreciate them taking time out of there day to talk to me
That's the basics I guess ...I am also always willing to help out when I am there if I see a need

Thanks Brett, i am in Ontario Canada..i am on the members map.
The farms I have been after recently are dairy and beef farms as I am targeting pigeons at this time of year but I am waiting to hear back from a race horse stable as well as there having a rat problem and I would like to try that out haha

Question, how much more powerful is a .22 air rifle over a .177 Cal?

Thanks bumbleB, my gun is set at right around 30 foot ponds and I would have to say that it depends on the gun your using as well as the pellet weight I am sure that there are .177 cal gun/pellet combo's out there that are hotter then my gun !?!?

I bought a .177 Crosman Nitro Venom, it says on the box that is shoots 1200 FPS with Alloy Pellets, but I am shooting Air Arms Diabolo Field Heavy 10.3 gr. I am not sure what FPS mine is shooting at. I did do some testing to see how powerful it is.

One test I did was shoot into a solid block of ice at 10 yards, after freezing water in a large plastic Mayo jar. the pellet barely penetrates the ice, here is a before and after picture of the pellet.

BumbleB, that looks like the pellet is doing its job well ...does your gun shoot them accurately? if so I would have no problems hunting with it and as a matter of fact two two of the pigeons I shot were in the barn and I used low power on my gun and it is about 11 foot pounds on low power ...i do practice with it and my 18gr JSB's at close range a lot just for this reason and I have no problem keeping it on there heads at 25 yards or less, I did have to shoot one in the chest at 18-19 yards on low power and got a full pass through!

...............Yes they do shoot very accurately, even more so then the JSB'S. I have purchased and shot 6 different brands so far out of my .177, the most accurate were the Diabolos followed by the JBS. I was happy about that because as mentioned the Diabolos are 10.3 gr. and the JBS are 7.9 gr.

From what I have researched the slower the FPs the harded the hitting and shocking power and I do prefer a harder hitting power especially in my big game rifles, so the same holds true with an air rifle I would imagine. I started with the Crosman Super point, they were not as accurate out of my barrel as the Diabolos are and being light weight and higher speeds the end result was "Ice Picking" birds without any hitting power.

I have a question: You mentioned that your rifle is set at 30 lbs, and Helimech stated in his viedo that he tunes his rifle to shoot 33 FP. Would you happen to know how that to determine what FP a my Crosman Nitro is shooting at and how to adjust it, is that even possible? ......... Can't get with of the color things!?!!! Cheers

Bumbleb i am not sure if you are able to adjust your guns power other then with the weight of the pellet but I use the Chairgun program to figure out the foot pounds energy that my pellet is hitting at and I think that I am at the sweet spot for my set up 18.13 grain JSB at 910fps = 33.1fpe at the muzzle and still has 15.7 at 40 yards! works for me

Would you know how to calculate mine? I have not the foggiest. All I know is that the Nitro Venom shoots 1200 fps with alloy pellets and I will never shoot alloy, I shoot lead so its dead haha..
