So in some testing with a .22 avenger it would shoot pellet into pellet holes repeatedly at 50yds but at 100 would open up to around 4inch groups. To get 100yd groups smaller the 50 yd groups opened up. Anyone else have this happen?
I'm not familiar with the Avenger or what Optic(s) you are using. I know that I usually have to make some adjustments in order zero any 50 yd change with most optics that I use. I sense it's within your optics without further info. If you find some inconsistencies it may be another issue. A lil marked tape on your MOA's may help differentiate your yardage issue.
Accuracy is a come of dispersion. As the distance increase so does the size of the group. The elements, gun handling, imperfections of the projectile not only come into effect but they magnify with the distance. Parallex enters into shooting different distance also.
Shoot some at 60. try some at 60, some more at 70 etc and see if you can identify when it starts falling off. That may help you identify what changes. A very slight breeze will only push the pellet off POA a little at 50 but can move it an inch at 100 depending on how early the wind started to affect the pellets path. Thx Dan
This is a pellet weight/velocity issue. How fast are you shooting what grain pellets? Design also has some input here but the bottom line is this. As velocity falls off at distance, your pellet is destabilizing and spiraling. That is causing your group to open up. You need to find a velocity that your pellet likes at both ranges if are dead set on that pellet. Otherwise, try a different weight or design of pellet.
That is a common pattern that I've observed mostly with longer pellets in barrels with tight choke diameters. Remedied by polishing or lapping the choke so the bore diameter is <=0.003" of the pellets' average head diameters.
