50 yard springer guys

I've seen some of the 50 yard groups guys have posted over the years and my hats off to you.

Today after practicing at 50 yards with one of my Winchester 52's I gave it a shot with my TX200. Needless to say my groups weren't impressive. LOL

My TX likes the AA 4.52 pellets, you really need a good day to get tight groups !!! Any wind so light you cant even feel it will open your groups. I have had 1/2" groups on a number of ocassions but it is not the norm !! Everything has to be just right including whether your having a good day or not. If your TX hasnt been opened up yet, it is time, whethervyou get a get or do your own basic like I have, you will see great improvement. .... I just polished the spring ends, added dampening compound to the spring and smoothed/ polished all sharp edges and moly pasted all metal to metal surfaces. My pellet did not load as smooth as it should so I re chamfered the breech. Accuracy became even better !! Now it shoots 900 fps with 8.4 gn pellets all shots within 6 fps spread with sorted pellets. Accuracy also improved by using beeswax furniture spray to lube my pellets. Not sure what all you have done but here are some ideas to help you out. good shooting !!

The rifle has been deburred, trigger polished, pillars added to the fore end screws, and has a Vortek PG4 kit installed. It averages 902 with AA 8.4's, ES 11, SD 4, the H&N Baracudas average 807 with a ES 9, SD of 2. The shot cycle is very nice now. The scope is a Hawke 3-12X 44 with a 1/2 mil reticle, not the best for long range but for what I intend to use the rifle for it'll be fine.

Today was breezy, if you look closely you can see there are two wind flags out. I was shooting off a bull bag in the front and a rabbit ear bag in the back, I'll experiment shooting off my hand at some point later. I've been wanting to try 50 yards and had time today, it was a fun day.

I'll have to check to see if I have any pellets larger than 4.51mm.

OK.....you've given it a little massage already then. Again, thats not all that bad at 50 yards. If there was a little breeze, that absolutely affects the grouping at that distance. Keep shooting at that distance trying different pellets and catch a day that is still with no breeze if you can. So many variables with a springer......but I'll bet that TX can really deliver. I'm kinda watchin your progression with that rifle. I've gotten my HW97 pretty well figured out with how it's set up and the pellet it loves the most......but it took some trial and practice. Keep at it 1BadDart.............TR.

I shoot 50yds most of the time when I break out my springer. Biggest effect on group size is wind wind wind. Here in Oklahoma there’s always wind of some sorts. I can shoot pretty decent in sustained winds but when the winds are switching(direction) or say 5mph then 8mph or more it’s pretty tough to shoot decent groups. Especially in the .177 class pellets. I’ve got wind flags but usually get too impatient.

As you can see I shoot in a little draw behind my house, shooting from west to east. The prevailing winds tend to roll over the hill and tumble in the draw, it's not uncommon for the flags to indicate opposite or near opposite directions. It makes for tough shooting at times, I'm not very good at reading the wind but have learned a bunch since setting up the range. The range was set up to practice 50 yard rimfire benchrest. Nothing serious but we shoot fun matches on Wednesday nights at my gun club.

I don't get it really. 177 cal springer at 50 yds is unreasonable. It really is. I may be out of

my Wheel House because I don't compete. But,,, well not enuff time to get into all that. (50 yd springer) 25 and 30 cal r the only choices, especially for hunting.

Don't agree. I took a .177 out to 75 yards, and I still felt I was the limiting factor. The sandbags weren't great, and I kept having to readjust. Positioning wasn't great, but still had some decent .177 caliber groups at 75 yards....

I'm going to have to disagree too. A good .177 springer is good for 1" or better a 50 yards easily.

This was a used target that I grabbed from the target shack that already had three large holes in it, before I began shooting. 75 yards, 25 shots, Walther LGU .177, AADF 8.4's

I had to chip ice out of the holes where the target frames mount at our 75 yard line to set up the target. It was snowing while I was shooting this target, with a slight breeze that I could occasionally feel on my face.

I mostly shoot at 50 yards with my LGU. I have shot around 60 10-shot groups with three different pellets and am averaging just over 1 inch for all groups. I'm really happy when I walk up to the target and all 10 can be covered by a quarter, which would be a 3/4 inch group, but I've only been able to do this four times so far. If I could get to where I could consistently do this, I would be very happy. It sure is fun to shoot this LGU.

The only thing one can do is keep trying different things, practice, and possibly more tuning. I'm sure you know your true capabilities from shooting your Winchester 52.

I tried it for the challenge and will do it again, just to try to get better and learn. I do a lot of unreasonable things though I suppose. I have a 700 HP small block in my street/strip 69 Dart, yes it’s unreasonable, but it’s also a he!! of a lot of fun.

Keep up the good work. Those are some nicely respectable groups! You should be a happy man with those groups.... I remember growing up I was just ecstatic to hit a tin can...boy the hobby has changed.

Thats not all that bad with a factory springer that hasn't been massaged any yet. I don't know about the TX, but I do know that my accuracy level at distance improved drastically with my HW97k after a good going through and giving it what I call a good massage. I'm sure that TX would be no different.

I really like your " massage" name...it really is a massage to get them to perform their best !!!
