30-Yard Challenge

This is a 30y with a customers 20fpe 15" barrel FT rifle. Rifle was put in a BR stock for testing. I'll call it a BR model since it's in a BR stock....even though it's a shorty.

Thomas BR 20 fpe
Jsb monster 13.4 at 810 fps
Mild wind 1-4 mph

It’s good to know that there are a few brands that like the 13.4g at 810-820 FPS for the 30 and 40Y Target Challenge. This seems to be the optimum velocity for this pellet.

Thomas, FX Crown, FX Dreamline, Akela, RAW TM1000x - all 177’s that happen to shoot pretty accurately with the 13.4g at this velocity.

I think this is our “first” perfect 200-20x Masters score since Feb 2022 when this challenge started.

Congrats Mike!

P.S. Ed and I were talking by phone earlier and he said he is going to buy himself an Olympic Feinwerkbau BR .177 800 series and give you a run for the money.

Only teasin’ I couldn’t resist.

Here's one for the spreadsheet. A 197 14X shot with my CaimanX with Arken 6-24 set at 24X. Pellets are H&N Baracuda 18s going about 875 fps. I measured the velocity of all but two shots and got a 37 ES (892 to 855). But the last 17 were better with a 23 ES. So hopefully the reg is settling down. I tried 900 and the ES dropped under 20 but the scores dropped to 188 and 190. So I'll leave it where it is accurate. Same score as the last target but with twice the Xs.

Went to range this morning and shot five 30Y Masters cards; one flag at 10Y from muzzle. Wind very light at start and only 1-2/3 mph a bit later.

RAW TM1000X .177
Sightron 45x ED
FX 13.4g trash cans

I numbered each card and shot them sequentially.

First card was a DQ. Bad pellet load in bull 4A. Had a pretty good card going

2nd card: 193-10X
3rd card: Another DQ. Bad chambering of pellet in 3A. Would have been a 198-14X
4th card: 193-12X
5th card: 199-13X ( almost made it to 200, but no leaderboard as I already posted a 199-17X in April)

The RAW TM1000x is highly sensitive to chambering these pellets. I always know when I will get a flier. The cocking is cumbersome and not smooth, if the pellet is not pushed in chamber all the way with firm thumb pressure. Has to be adjustment on pellet probe is my thought.

Took the Taipan Vet2 700mm .22 caliber with me today. Wind light again today at the start at 9:20 am.

Shot six cards. Three 30Y Masters and three 40Y Masters. One of the 40Y Masters was a 180, so threw it away.

It pains me to say it, but June has not been kind to me this week. Despite shooting another 199-13X 30Y Masters, no leaderboards.

30 Y Masters:

199-13X
198-15X
191-9X

40Y Masters:

190-6X
191-10X
180 throw away

The JSB 20.83g and JTS 22.07g are shooting very well. No complaints with this rifle.

Returned home this afternoon around 4:30, retrieved the mail and suddenly realized there was only a very slight breeze blowing. Dumped the mail on the kitchen counter and headed for the garage to get my wind flags and a 40 YD Masters card put out before the conditions changed. Went as follows:

1st card score was 194-12X 2-eights and 2-nines.
2nd card score was 195-15X 1-eight and 3-nines.
Gave up on that tin of pellets due to the unexplained flyers and switched to a different pellet lot.
3rd card score was a 198-16X with back-to-back nines in block three.
For the 4th card I decided to put out a 40 Yd Challenge card in hopes I might improve my odds a bit. It worked, but I still ended up with two unexplained flyers on the card in spite of shooting in what I think were almost ideal conditions. The tails on the flags stayed within ten degrees of vertical until I was on the last row of the 4th card.

Ed, please replace my existing 40 YD Challenge score with the attached 200-19X card.

Wow, great card Marvin - awesome shooting!

Do any of you guys feel like I do… That Marvin’s “flyers” at 40 yards with .177 pellets are darn good shots for the average shooter, lol?

I’ll try to get a leaderboard update posted later this week, as we have had a number of new submissions.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. Marvin doesn’t have any fliers. 😄

3rd day at the range this week. I’m about ‘ranged out.’ Lucy is too😂😂😂

Have not shot the Daystate Huntsman Revere in a while. Switched scopes and put the Vortex Diamondback FFP 6X24X 50mm on it. Not my favorite, as it is not that clear to my eyes on 24x magnification. This rifle needs a better scope when I can buy one. I love Leupolds but they are way too expensive.

Wind was light but the 2-4 mph kept me busy changing my holds 3/4 times while shooting my cards.

Shot seven cards: Four 30Y Masters and three 30Y Challenge cards. I shot several cards in the mid to high 180’s, but not shown.

30Y Masters:

186-9X
187-4X
190-6X
192-12X ( Leaderboard )

30Y Challenge:

185-4X
194-8X
196-15X ( Leaderboard)

Finally got a couple decent cards with the Revere. The best target pellet for this rifle is the 15.89 at 870-880 FPS range.

Well I have what I think is an interesting target for the spreadsheet. I shot it this morning in what the weather report says is 8mph winds. It doesn't seem that windy but it is not calm. I think it is a 198 14X from my P35-25 shooting FX 25.4 grain pellets at 905 average using my Primary Arms 4-14X scope set at 14X. I've been working on this rifle because I got a gift of a P35X from another member and instead of fixing it I at least temporarily made it worse. So I moved the barrel and hammer spring to my P35. The barrel is 60mm longer and the hammer spring a little heavier. Fpe for the shots on this target was 45-46 which is not the highest I have had on this rifle but with the stock barrel I have to have the regulator at the very maximum the hammer spring will open to get out of the low 40 fpe range. I thought I had it set safely lower but when I got the new barrel on it the fps was low, again, and I switched out the hammer spring instead of lowering the regulator. I have two complete revolutions up I can go on the hammer spring now so I should be safe. This is the first target with the rifle in this configuration, I have not tested other pellets. I fired no warmup shots just sat down and shot straight from the tin and through a Maple printed magazine. The PA 4-14 I used is what it normally wears, with a higher magnification scope this might have been a 200. I also do not have the trigger as light as I sometimes set them, I used my gauge on it 4 times and got 8 ounces, 12, ounces, 14 ounces and 16 ounces. The variability is pretty typical for my P35s but my P35-22 is set to about half this. The ES on these 24 shots was 10 fps and the std deviation 2.8. I could increase the power a little but I'm planning to leave it alone. The gun is working great (at least great for a sub $500 airgun). I can get about another 10 shots on the reg with this tune and I can get about another dozen usable shots off reg. It only falls 10 or 15 fps for the first dozen or so shots after it falls off the reg. So 34 on reg plus 12 more usable shots on about 220cc of 250 bar air.

Nice shooting Jimmy. Vertical dispersion looks almost perfect on this card !

This is a leaderboard submission for the next spreadsheet.

I shot it using a new-to-me Stoeger Bullshark in 22 using my Vector Sentinel 9-32 scope set at 32X and shooting Crosman Domed 14.3 grain pellets at 935fps average. I think it's a 194 12X. I remember a bunch of us were shooting Crosmans a year or more ago to see what we could do. I think this may be the best I've done with them. I think it shoots JSB and H&N 18s and H&N 21s better but I have not tested a lot of pellets in it. I was using "cheap" Crosmans trying to see if I have the regulator fixed and it seemed to like them so... It wants them going fast like this. With the same 140 bar regulator setting the 18s are going 860-870 fps and the 21s barely over 800. The 18s seem slightly better accuracy and the H&N may edge out the JSB but that comment is based upon only a few 5 shot groups. Have not tested lighter or heavier JSBs yet. This regulator came to me messed up some. It would not keep velocity constant and then failed to function at all. The lock nut for the setting was stiff on the screw making setting it without removal from the gun impossible. I put another SPA regulator in the gun for awhile and I think it was working but then it too stopped. Neither of these regulators were "fixed" by my normal regrease the O-rings routine. I replaced all the O-rings in this one yesterday and I got a ES of only 10 on the last 21 shots on this target. Hopefully it will keep working at this level.

Wow - lots of great card submissions from our shooters !

I've got a couple submissions myself - even though its been so windy this week here.

First some thoughts on some the AEA pellets that I've been trying.

I've been getting some great results with little AEA .177 8.72g pellets. I've had great results with this pellet across three barrels and two air rifle brands. I'd recommend everyone pick up a tin and give them a try. I know that 8.72g seems too light - but they have been performers at 30 yards across a range of velocities. The AEA 10.3g and 13.7g also performed very well - as good as FX/JSB in my FX barrels.

The AEA pellets load much more smoothly than JTS.

I've also had awesome results with .25 AEA 29.63g shooting at 75 and 100 yards with my RTI Prophet .25LR.

I've just tried the AEA 15.89g in my Benjamin Cayden. They have performed very well despite crazy winds the past few days. My Cayden is tuned to shoot 15.89g at 800-820 fps (unregulated) over a 60+ shot string.

The AEA 21.9g performed good in my RTI Prophet .22LR - but JSB 20.83g are noticeably better in this Prophet. The AEA 21.9g did very well in my FX PowerPup at 75 yards. These AEA 21.9g did not do well in my .2 Taipan Vet 2 - shot a 169 40-Masters - definitely seemed to spiral at the 920-930fps I was shooting them from the Taipan.

SUBMISSIONS:
Target: 30-Challenge
Score: 194 9X
Rifle: Benjamin Cayden .22
Pellet: AEA 15.89g @ 810-820fps
Scope: Athlon Argos 10-40 SFP at 36X

Target: 40-Challenge
Score: 195 10X
Rifle: RTI Prophet Performance .22LR
Pellet: JSB 20.83g @ 907-914fps
Scope: Sightron SIII 45X fixed power

I'm also posting some other cards I shot with AEA pellets - including a 198 17X and 195 with Greg's (NAProf) barrel in my Crown Mk2. Greg should buy some of the AEA 8.72g to try when he eventually gets his barrel back from me. Dang, 17X - I don't get many 17X cards in a year.

I've also got a submission from with my Dreamline and maybe one other rifle from a week or two ago that I gotta dig up...
