.30 FX 44.8gr : Weight sorting results

Sorted a tin of FX .30 44.8’s.
Scale goes to 2 decimal places, rounded results to tenths place. Each pellet weighed 3x. Scale calibrated before use. The 45.1+ has one 45.2 and one 45.3.

Well that's a pretty terrible spread. I guess if one were to look at the bright side, least most are on the 44.8 and 44.9 side of things. I would be curious to see how much of POI change there would be from 44.3 to 45.1 with the zero being at the 44.8 weighted pellet.

Im fairly new to airgun trajectory-POI variances but i have a lifetime of experience in archery

So i can tell you at 50 yards 5 grain variance in arrow weight doesnt effect POI enough to tell

I’ve been noticing ~1% +/- pattern when weighing pellets regardless of brand, even caliber, however the dispersion is not the same. Here, 45.2 is 1% over and 44.3 is 1% under. If you cut it to 1/2% you get the vast majority of thr pellets, but this tin has some extremes more than others.

POI testing is exactly why ive been sorting. Keeping them in labeled boxes takes up some room on the shelf but so does all the other airgun paraphernalia! My hypothesis is that the close 1/2% wont show much difference, but the extreme 1/2% would. Head sizing is next for really thorough results. Thus when testing all data will be included and compared, including chrony.
There is also the tune considerations to acknowledge, but the Prophet is so precise out of the box I will prob not stray from the stock tune for this venture.

That's an excellent spread for being mass produced with only having eight tenths of a grain spread. You got lucky...Cross your fingers that the next tin is as good. I have seen much larger spreads up to nearly four grains in a tin. A two grain spread is more typical. If shooting under say fifty yards, you're not going to notice much of a POI shift with that tin, if any.

You bring up a great point about tin to tin differences. I bought a few tins of the FX 44’s...now im really curious about tin to tin consistency. So far, out of the 25 cal and 30 cal tins of pellets I sorted ( various brands) the 1% thing has held fairly true. BUT that was one tin of each brand. I’ll keep sorting and post more.

I sort my .25 and .30 the same way you do. And if you work hard enough, you might find one weight it shoots better than others. But that takes a LOT of work.

So, I sort maybe 5 or 6 tins and get the same result. At 100 yards, yes from 44.2 to 45.2, it makes a difference. So, I end up with tins of pellets I feel weigh all the same. For me, it doesn't matter which weight I choose. Just knowing they are all the same size helps my confidence.

Now if you really want to get down to it, take the box of 44.6 and check them all for head size and sort that way. Now you will really be able to tell a difference. If you happen to know which head size your gun shoots best.

I’ve been sorting and weighing pellets for 2 years. You will get mostly 2 different head diameter and up to a full grain in weight spread on an ave JSB tin. FX and Edgun JSB have less weight spread per tin. But the different head sizes will matter. I’ve had a total of 4 different head diameter from jsb pellets, as many as 3 in a single tin. I do mostly 25 cal.
