3 Weeks With the FX Wildcat MKIII Sniper .25 Accessories, Mods, Tune, & Accuracy

Quick morning gong target session @ 50 & 100 yards with the MKIII’s new stacked plenums. Using JSB 33.95g (averaging 926fps & 64fpe) and NSA 33.5g (averaging 918fps & 62fpe). 5 shot groups.

The wind was pretty bad. Tropical Storm Cristobal is right below Texas and Louisiana in the gulf and we can feel it!

Hey Joe did you buy that Huma gauge direct from Huma? Or somewhere in the states? I just wonder about European shipping with what's going on around the world right now. I've been waiting for a magazine for my Airwolf from Darko in Croatia and they are not allowing shipping to the US right now

Huma-air.com directly. They have made shipping changes since the pandemic. They used to use USPS before the horrible disease situation started and took 7 to 14 days for delivery. Now, after two recent orders, I have noticed that they use UPS and my orders arrived in 5 to 7 days..

Thanks Joe I'll make my order today. I Am brand new to FX airguns I have daystates now. If you don't mind could you give me a little more detail on what you did to tune your Wildcat? As I said earlier I'm getting a .22 but in the future I hope to get a .30 conversion kit. I'm thinking the power plenum will be even more beneficial on larger caliber guns do you agree?

Before I state this… *Disclaimer*

FX probably set your Wildcat MKIII up perfectly from the factory. You don’t have to change anything and just shoot it as it is.

Now then. There are so many ways to do this but this is my way, and I am only sharing it because you asked me. I like to help people out.

@ whatever AMP regulator pressure you set your Wildcat on

(On power #7)

Quarter turns on the adjuster at a time (counter clockwise), then chronograph a few shots.

Is the speed increasing?

You want just enough hammer tension to reach the MKIII’s highest velocity with the AMP regulator’s pressure setting. No wasted air! Wasted air causes inaccuracies and poor efficiency.

Quarter turns are the moves you make then chronograph a couple shots, whether adjusting up or down. Find the top speed while power level # 7 is selected.

Now, here comes the efficiency part…

When and after you find the highest speed ( on power level # 7) Turn your HST wheel down to power level # 6. Take a few shots over the chronograph on power #6. You should see a 10 to 20 fps slower velocity. If you don’t, then you have got too much hammer spring tension. In other words you are adjusted too far out, which wastes air.

Dial it back… (clockwise) Quarter turns and take a few shots (Over the chrony) on power #7 and power #6. Until you see a 10 to 20 fps difference between power #6 and #7.

*BUT* You still want power # 7 to be at or around that highest velocity that you where reaching. But power #6 is a slower velocity. 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 power levels should all gradually be slower and slower fps.

Make sense?

Look at my power levels 1 through 7. Using Air Arms 25.4 grain pellets?

Remember:

If there is no difference in speed of power 7 and 6 you’ve got too much hammer spring tension, and power 7 is wasting air. You want your highest setting to have just enough regulated air and hammer strike (tension) to the valve to give you your top speed. Nothing more nothing less. Every lower setting will fall where they fall, but gradually get slower down to power level #1.

Thank you for explaining it the way you did that makes perfect sense to me I was having a little trouble wrapping my head around it with what you and the other guys were talking about having no experience with these rifles. Question number two in 30 cal I would think the double plenum would be very beneficial. But in .22 will it be more than necessary would a single power plenum be a better compromise. I would think those are the only two calibers I will ever shoot out of this gun

👍🏽

Can’t answer that without testing it myself. It’s all dependent on many variables. I’d assume you would gain power using any caliber with similar results to my .25.

Thank you so much for all your help Joe and I'm sure I will ask you for more if you don't mind. I think I'm going to order that Huma gauge and a single power plenum for now and when I get a 30 cal kit I may have to evaluate whether I need to add a second power plenum.

P.s. does FX give any kind of Baseline settings for the different calibers? So I know where to begin when I do get my 30 cal conversion kit?

You’re welcome,

Don’t know, try calling FXUSA, Monday through Friday or checking their website? How about PM’ing me for any other questions that you may have? If that’s kool? 😎

Joe, curious about your thoughts on the 700mm barrel. The barrel on mine seems to have a fair amount of "flex". (although the accessory mount on your air cylinder may be stabilizing the barrel somewhat).

In stock form flex is minimal and doesn’t effect accuracy..., but there is a reason for everything I do to my airguns. Hence, the accessories you see on them.

Triple pic-rail air cylinder / barrel support reasons:

no barrel clanking with the air cylinder (gone)

has a contoured groove which the barrel nestles or rest right into keeping the barrel in generally one position

barrel harmonics

dubbs as a extended field rest, works on shooting sticks, trees, fences / fence posts etc. preventing damage and scratches to the anodizing

mounting accessories torches/lights, laser sights, etc.

Carbon fiber wrap reasons:

0% fingerprints +++

dampens barrel harmonics

dampens barrel clanking against the air cylinder, no metal to metal clank (stealth)

barrel anodizing protection / protects against scratches

cosmetics

I am more prone to fix / modify something I don’t like then complain.

That is totally cool. Sorry I'm not sure in proper etiquette.

No worries.. It’s just if you have a ton of specific questions I’d rather we communicate there.

My High Flow Dual Hole Transfer Port by Huma-air was delivered today! There was no hesitation in the install to see what if any gains the Wildcat MKIII Sniper .25 would have with the dual plenum extensions and the dual hole transfer port. The AMP regulator is still set to only 135 bar.

Removed all o-rings from the original transfer port before applying heat for removal.

Just needed to apply the thread lock and snug it up.

She’s smooth..

Check and make adjustments for magazine fitment.

Well, I put the MKIII back together and got her zero’d with JSB King Heavy MKII 33.95 grain (5 clicks up & 5 clicks right).

Now for the moment of truth.. Chronograph time!

Before the dual hole transfer port, with only the dual stacked plenum extensions she averaged 926 fps on the power #7 setting with the AMP regulator setting of 135bar (Using JSB 33.95g pellets). Here’s the results with the same tuning, and only the addition of the new transfer port.

Looks like a very small gain maybe just a few fps. Well, some is better then none.

Before the dual hole transfer port, with only the dual stacked plenum extensions she averaged 918 fps on the power #7 setting with the AMP regulator setting of 135bar (Using NSA 33.5g slugs). Here’s the results with the same tuning, and only the addition of the new transfer port.

1591662378_3245939035eded72aaf6cb9.72113797.jpeg

Almost 15fps gain with NSA 33.5 grain slugs. Riddle me that?? Well, I will take it! Its a easy power gain for any projectile I may shoot! The air can flow slightly better.

The accuracy is phenomenal! Later, I will start a whole new thread on the entirety of all the mods and accuracy of the WC MKIII .25. But this afternoon she was hitting the exact same spot over and over on my gong target @ 100 yards!!

Keep them coming joe. It just keeps my blood up while waiting for my .22

That’s probably it for modifications... For now.

The dual port Huma could be an accuracy upgrade if the center rib is better than the big round hole at supporting the pellet/ slug more evenly as it slides over the port.

Accuracy is sick! Your theory sounds interesting 🧐... 🤔...
