3~12x compact-class scopes...

I don’t have first hand experience with any of these scopes but here are a couple more options that have been discussed on the forum. If I were picking from all the ones listed it would be the Discovery.

Thanks @cannonball . Yes read about that USO in some discussion here on AG... ultimately the glass quality if not the glass itself is the same as the Discovery and/or Veyron. Was said that the $$ difference more covers the better warranty USO offers over the Discovery/Tac Veyron.

That aside, I do like what that Discovery you posted offers (vs the two I posted, or at least against the Veyron). Reticle looks busy though.

Athlon came out with a new Helos 2-12x42 FFP that has been getting good reviews...nice reticle too.

The Helos is over two inches longer than what has been mentioned already. I don’t know if that would be a deal breaker for the OP. That said, you do give up some things when you go to a compact scope. Maybe the Helos wouldn’t be effected as much as the shorter options.

Airmax for me ,have both scopes ,the Discovery has a shorter "eye bow" for me,meaning eye placement is more critical plus the Discovery is heavier....$200 more?nay,I never pay retail....

I would do some more studying on what you really need and what you really want.... that does not work too often,LOL because then you may say,"I should have got what I really wanted"..

Those scopes I have are the older models...For lighter scopes I go to Burris and Leupold ...the price difference may not be that much?

I have the Discovery in SFP they sell both first and second plane and yes the eye box is a little tight and the field of view is smaller than that of longer scopes with that said I really like it I would buy the compact 16 power if it was a second focal plane, me personally I don't like first focal plane scopes and please people don't attack me for that statement just my preference.

I also have the Hawk 4x16x44 compact and is really nice but I didn't like the way the side focus worked. To be repeatable I had the return to zero each time then back up to have the same focus points. I briefly mounted it then removed and put back in it's box.

If anyone is interested in buying it PM me it's new and perfect with all packaging and paperwork.

Here's a Scopes Specs Table for compact scopes (and those that are 3-12x and 3-9x).

To make it into the table scopes usually:

▪Have 10y side parallax

▪Holdoff reticle

▪Exposed turrets (well, most have that)

▪Around $500 or less

🔶The table helps to compare the relevant specs quickly.

▪Price and warranty

▪Length and weight

▪Field of view

▪Grouped by SFP and FFP

▪Type of reticle (some: line thickness)

▪Max. elevation adjustement

▪Turrets (mil or moa; clicks per revolution; turn counter; lockable)

🔶 You likely will have to prioritize....

E.g.: There are few FFP that have IR.

E.g.: There are more SPF than FFP's in this scope group.

E.g.: There are a lot of grid style FFP reticles, and most have thick outside posts for good reticle visibility at low magnifications.

E.g.: A large percentage of SFP scopes in this class have capped turrets — so these are not really made for turret dialers.

Happy scope shopping! 😊

(Am I missing any other comparably good 'compact' 3~12x's?)

I would look at the specs on the Optisan 3-12x32. I'd like to try one eventually.

https://www.trenieroutdoors.com/optics-2/optisan/optisan-optics-3-12x32-mh10-reticle/

Nice scope, I just got one. Glass a lot better than I anticipated. If it only had an illuminated daylight bright floating dot it would be darn near perfect. Actually I have not mounted it on anything yet, just playing around with it. Trenier just got them back in stock.

I like FFP scopes but if your low end is under 6x it gets pretty hard to use the reticle usually, and I have switched to SFP. The Veyron is a decent scope in SFP and you can use the reticle at lower powers with some really simple math. It depends on your usage but I usually leave mine turned up anyway because has an Airgunner my targets are usually small and the reticle subtends tends to 12x. Using Strelok anyway, SFP/FFP doesn't really matter much has it figures for everything anyway. The other thing is that the SFP is less money too. If you rarely turned the power down on your 3-12 scope, as some people say they don't, then FFP isn't doing anything for you anyway. I don't know your situation, but a lot of people have complained about the reticle at 3 power being unusable on the FFP version, so I mention it.

I just got back in town last night and haven't had time to respond much over the weekend.

Here's my opinions. The quality built into the new Helos G2 2-12x42 is really something that has to realized in person. Not a single person that has played with mine has had anything negative to say about it, in fact they all were VERY impressed instead!

The thing is that even though it's FFP the reticle is sized so it can be seen on 2x. It's pretty much the perfect FFP hunting scope. Let's be real here, our better hunting AG's are EDIT - 1 moa guns (not 1/2 moa) on a good day at 50Y, well that's basically the size of the dot at 50Y. Then you have the circle of death around the dot that's 2 mil wide which helps with super fast acquisition! So the scope is like a prism sight but with more magnification. Here's a real world example of how easy the reticle is to use on even small targets. I was able to go 7 for 8 on the 10Y/.5" and the 13Y/75" stage at the PFT event during the Sonoran Grand Prix this weekend. Believe me you will not be held back in the least if you want to hunt with this scope! I know you guys know I'm an Athlon fanboy, however I'm also a consumer like you, and as a avid shooter I have to say I love this scope for what it is and it's amazing versatility !!!

Except for a little weight and length there is no other scope in the price range of the Helos G2 that can hold a candle to it! Truly EXCEPTIONAL is how I would describe it.

Just hit a target with a 64y (58m) cold-bore shot with a 14.8FPE pistol (rested on a door frame).

Dialed 3.5 mil elevation, 0.6 mil windage.

Scope: Discovery Compact VT-3 3-12x44 FFP.

Around $200.

Dialing shots successfully for about a year now. Sometimes with wind holdoffs. Very pleased. 👍🏼

It was a tossup between the VT-3 and the HD version of this Discovery scope. The HD has a gridded reticle, and ilumination. And (maybe) better glass. Price almost the same.

The Discovery VT-3 3-12x44 also is sold as Vector Veyron. But the Vector does not have thick outside posts to guide the eye to the crosshair intersection when on low magnification.

The VT-3 is also sold at US Optics TS-12X with nicer turrets, a better warranty, and for twice the price

Just my personal experience. The next PCP pistol gets the Discovery HD 3-12x44 FFP (or the Athlon Helos G2 2-12x42, if money wasn't such an issue)! 😄
