.25cal observation

I shot my first magpie with a .25cal today (first anything that wasn't paper). Based on the sound on impact and how it dropped I would say the 25gr .25cal hits harder than the 25gr .22cal Redesigned I was using last year. It makes sense as there is more surface area on the pellet that makes contact. The velocity of the .25cal pellet was slower than the .22cal Redesigned I was shooting last year. 28fpe vs 40fpe at 30 yards as per Strelok Pro.

The killing power of the 25 continues to amaze me. Based on having shot more than a few ground squirrels with both the 25 from a PCP and a 22RF, I'd say on chest cavity shots, the 25 is fully equal to, and likely more effective than the 22RF. Maybe I'm showing my bias to 25 caliber PCP's, but I swear, you thump a squirrel in the chest with one, they go down faster than a Kardashian...

I think you are spot-on with your thoughts about the increased (frontal) surface area being the key. It's akin to getting shot with a quarter-inch hole punch. Since they aren't going to expand appreciatively, the expansion is built in via the diameter. Same theory as the LBT wide flat nose bullets used in large caliber handguns for hunting. Make the most you can out of the given caliber's diameter via a meplat as big as you can get it. Makes for a helluva permanent wound channel.
