.25cal FX Hybrid slugs with 700mm (standard) Superior liner question

I was wondering how these slugs were shooting out of the standard Superior liner. How do they compare to other slugs of a similar weight (NSA or others) and what is the upper limit of slug weight to use with the standard Superior liner. Where I live slugs are hard to come by and I'm considering getting into making my own. I don't want to start buying new liners and carbon fiber sleeves to shoot slugs, so I would like to stick to the standard Superior liner.

Very good question that I've been wondering myself as I'm new to the PCP world. I've have the NSA .25 26.8 slugs through my M3 700 and have been happy with the results out to 100 yards. I want more take down power though. What would be the max weight slug I'd want to put through my STX superior barrel? At what point would I change my dual transfer port to slugs? I have some 33.95 MKII pellets on order, would I want to try these with the transfer port on slugs because of the weight? Or will they work best with the port on pellets?

With hybrid slugs you don’t need superior heavy, they actually prefer a little slower twist rate because their donut like hollow core exaggerate the gyroscopic effect or rotational torque of the hybrid slug and becomes more stable compared to the solid core/normal slugs at the same rotational speed.

the difference between dish and flat based slugs to my knowledge is relatively minimum. Generally it affects the aero dynamic of the slug and because lack of material at the base of the dish based slugs it makes the dish based slugs are slightly longer and shift the center of mass ever so slightly forward but the difference is very small. The problem with most airgun pellet barrel is the twist rate is low and the slugs are shot with very barely enough gyroscopic stabilization that any length increase could push it over to be not stabilized but easy fix is a slug specific barrel which will have more than enough twist rate to stabilize the slugs properly then there is no difference besides VERY small aero dynamic difference that most likely will not show up in the published BC.

In summary with normal solid core a lugs or slugs besides FX Hybrids you need a dedicated slug barrel to shoot them well reliably, very little guessing involved. Not saying some of them won’t shoot well out of normal airgun pellet barrels, just the chances will be lower and you need to do a lot more testing. With FX superior heavy liners I have not found a slug that wont’t shoot well in them yet.

Thanks for the replys gentlemen. After much deliberation I ordered the GMI dimple and hollow point die set with flat base and pellet base options. I went with 28 and 34 grain sizes. From what I understand using pure lead with the pellet base and hollow point punch, the 34 grain die should put out a 27-28 grain slug that is approx the same length as the FX Hybrid. The 26 grain die would make a 21-22 grain hollow point slug. Apparently the pellet base punch lessens the weight by about 6 grains. There will be a lot of experimenting for sure.
