.25 + Small Game + 10 - 15 yards = Overkill???

"AirgunBill"For long range shooting at prairie dogs I would go with medium to heavy weight dome pellets to buck the wind and maintain down range energy. JSB 25's & 33's and Air Arms 25's Benjamin Domes and H&N Baracuda 31 grain. Now in my FX Wildcat all these pellets shot good to excellent groups at 50 yards but only the Air Arms 25 grain pellets would hold 1 to 2" groups at 100 yards. So the pellet you choose should be the one that holds accuracy at the furthest distance you plan to shoot. If you can't hit it you can't kill it. Now for your close range shooting at your house you might want to try some hollow points for the expansion and pop factor for close up varmint shooting. The hollow points in generally don't hold up accuracy wise at over 50 yards. H&N has some nice high quality hollow point pellets to try. Bill
Copy that... Thanks.

"T3PRanch"That .25 Marauder IS power adjustable. Just not with a convenient wheel on the side of the gun. You can control the power with a couple of internal hammer adjustments accessible through a port at the rear without disassembling anything and by the amount of pressure you use for filling the gun. Instructions will be in the manual and on several forums. That said it is best to use a chronograph to "tune" with.

Thurmond
I did not know that, but I am glad I do know now!

Without going to far into details, what does "tuning" on an air rifle actually do? On my R/C cars, tuning will give you loner run times, runs cooler, less amp draw and things like that. What does the tuning do on an air rifle? More shots per fill?

Thanks,

Kmd

"kmd1984"OK FOLKS, I JUST PULLED THE TRIGGER! (NO PUN INTENDED).

I went ahead and ordered the .25 + the Benjamin pump from Walmart. They offer a 90 days return policy on air rifles as well. If for some reason the .25 will not work out (guts spilling all over the place that is), I can always return it. Right.

That said, what ammo should I get? I read that a lot of people are happy with JSB pellets??? Should I get different ones and see what works best, or can I trust other having done the research already? I say this because I don't know if every gun (literally, every gun) reacts different to each ammo?

Thanks,

Kmd
I think you made the right choice. The 25 cal Marauder is a better gun than the .22. Greater accuracy is always better.

I upgraded from .22 to .25 for all of the PCP rifles I use regularly and I have never found it to be over-kill. I found my .22 to be under-powered on a few occasions though.

Nobody can guarantee a perfect head shot every time with small game. Squirrels sometimes move as you take your shot. This happened to me with a .22 a while ago. It caused the head shot I aimed for to become a body shot. I could hear the squirrel screaming in pain for hours after it ran off into the bushes. A body shot with my 25 cal guns usually puts them down in seconds if I miss the head shot. Luckily this doesn't happen too often but it's good to have the extra juice just in case.

Poor guy! That is what I am afraid of... no need to make a critter suffer.

"T3PRanch"You can tune for more shots per fill or more power. The marauder is a dual fuel gun. CO2 or Compressed air.

Don't know what Walmart charged but they are on sale at Cabelas for $399.

Thurmond
Isn't CO2 cheaper than getting a scuba shop to fill a tank with regular air? Anyhow. I paid $480 plus TAX. However, Walmart offers 90 days return policy. I doubt the other store does that. Maybe Walmart will price match?

Thanks,

Kmd

CO2 is cheaper but will generally provide less power than Compressed air or Nitrogen which should not be an issue in your case I would think. I ran a different gun on CO2 for a brief time and once I shot it on Compressed gas at 3000 psi fill pressure I never used CO2 Again BUT I have a very Large amount of land (not near any city) and no nearby neighbors which lends itself to a totally different type of shooting environment than yours.

If you got a hand pump and Marauder for that price you did just fine. Remember since the gun is dual fuel you don't have to pump to 3K psi. You can simulate CO2 with less pressure which equates to a lot less pumping.

I shoot both those pellets but since I use mostly 3K PSI (or more in the case of a different gun) I go with the JSB Heavys (I have 25 tins on hand). You will be fine with the lighter one for your shooting.

"blackdiesel"Better to have and not need than to need and not have. Get a 25 cal Sumatra so you can kill small to medium game with a simple power adjustment and different pellets.
I agree on the first part... But not on the Sumatra. I never liked how it looks.
I'm glad I love the way they look. But as far as practicality, in my 25 cal I can get anywhere from 32 FPE up to over 80 FPE with 43 gr pellets. So essentially it can fit in where a 22 cal, 25 cal and 30 cal guns. Plus it's super accurate.

"kmd1984"I guess any of these will do the job, correct?

I guess I can get both and see how it goes. I also ordered a Chrono. No idea what to do with it, but there is always Professor Internet that can help. : )
If you are ordering single tins just to test I would look at Trenier Outdoors. Their price per tin beats just about any vendors. They also sell sample packs of 50 pellets for $4.99 so you can test different pellets to see which work best in your gun. When I order a lot I will go with the 4 for price of 3 plus 10% discount at PA.

Diesel, thanks for the tip! Saving a few bucks here and there is never going to hurt! : )

Personally I have 3 pellets I use for my .25 Marauder, well more like 2. I usually stick to using JSB or Air Arms 25gr pellets, but if I find myself going up against a particularly tough critter I break out my predator polymags. Those things are nasty pieces of work if they're accurate in your rifle. From personal experience I've taken raccoons with heart/lung shots with them in the past.

Also for a bone stock .25 Marauder you're going to be getting about 16 idea shots per fill.

"JohnL57"You'll probably love that .25, I know mine is great-except for the shot count! I shoot my .22 Marauder far more than the .25 for that reason.
Enjoy your .25!
John
John nails it on the shot count which is only about 16 shots for the .25 caliber. When I heard that your varmints are prairie dogs and ground squirrels that means you can sit down in place and take dozens of shots in an outing. That means before you know it you will have to be standing up in the heat and doing some fairly strenuous pumping to get the rifle ready to shoot again. That's why I suggested the FX Gladiator as one of the rifle choices. While it is a heavier rifle that won't matter as much as you can walk to a prairie dog town and sit down and have at them. The Gladiator will get well over a hundred shots per fill. I would rather spend most of my time shooting and not pumping a rifle while in the field. In general I would rather have a carbon fiber 4500 psi tank to fill such a large capacity rifle as the Gladiator. However it might be a good strategy with your hand pump to take your time at home in filling your Gladiator in your air conditioned home and then go shooting. Not to bust your bubble here or dampen you spirit but just want to give you an idea of whats ahead. Bill

Got another idea since your going with the Mrod to get the Guppy 4500 psi carbon fiber tank from Air Tanks For Sale. It is light enough to carry with you in the field in a backpack. You can then top off your rifle for about 13 times or 208 shots. Cost of the tank and fill system about $400
