.25 Slug Liner.....Not What I expected

OK,

New Impact MK2 PP w 700 mm barrel

Shoots lights out at 60 y w JSB 34gn MKII's. with Pellet Liner....best group 0.356"

With Slug Liner, it starts to group at 30 y then I completely miss the target....then it tries to group again and then two or three shots can't even hit the paper and I hear the shot hit the ground which is three feet below the bull. I mean.....What The Heck?????

Checked that everything was tight. It was.

Liner was cleaned prior to shooting. Crown looks good.

Using a Midas Tac FFP milrad scope and not moving the rifle between shots.

Shooting into a fairly brisk wind today but that would not cause a 3 foot miss at 30 yards.

Shooting Nielsen 36.2 gn slugs at 865 fps, reg at 115 bar with the Valve at 4 bars.

I also tried the same slugs at 950 fps at 140 bar with the Valve at 4 bars with similar results.

Anybody???

My first impression is ....bad liner.

Check retainer screw....not that tight.

Here are a couple of targets at 10 yards. I aim at the center and get a shot at the center (or close), and then the next shot is high and left. The other target does the same thing but more shots. Starts to group at the bull then goes high and left and starts grouping and grouping well. I'm just scratchin' my head.

Do you have a moderator on it? Clipping is the only thing I have seen that bad and I have also had 2 bad slug liners, they shot .5 @ that range, but one hole is what you are looking for, now the 36 grn nsa, was best in a 600mm and close to worst in my 700? If you are running any moderator? Shoot a ten shot group without one real quick to confirm. My taipan with a sumo will shoot slugs like that but pellets perfect, had to go up to a 30 cal And all was good, really surprised me! Good luck!

Good questions, guys. I'm using the OEM moderator. I thought about clipping right away so I did unscrew the end cap and looked at the inside of the exit hole and saw no signs of clipping whatsoever.

But I will try shooting a group without the moderator when I go back to the slug barrel. Right now I have switched back to the Pellet Liner. Hoping that the wind will stay calm in the morning. Supposed to be 27 degrees early but forecast is no wind at 7 am...so I'll doing the layers thing......then the wind goes up to 9 mph by early afternoon. I think a big cold front is pushing through today.

Out of the box this gun shot amazing groups so I'll see if anything has changed. Actually I shot out of the box with a BSA 4-14 ffp scope then switched to the Midas Tac once it arrived so the Midas is under suspicion as well . If groups are still bad with the change back then I'll try swapping scopes.

Stay tuned....

Hi guys,

To answer a few questions.

1. I never rest the gun on the barrel. Either the bottle or an Atlas bipod. Everything is bottle on a bag with these targets.

2. I haven't tried different slugs but plan to. I went with 36 gn because FX told me they were having real good results at 860 fps w 1/2" groups at 75 y. I'll get the sample pack.

3. This morning I switched back to the Pellet Liner and I got bad results

4. I switched scopes and got bad results.

Jayson, looks like you might be taking the Consolation Prize home with you today as I did try taking the moderator off. I'll let the pictures below do the rest of the talking.

Shooting with PELLET LINER A, at 30y, w JSB 34gn MKII, speed -900 at Max. Dialed in the valve a smidgen and tried different Power settings.

First target is everything wide open; second target is at different power settings and the third target is with moderator OFF, at power wheel #4 and 10 shots in the red.

So I'm going to conclude CLIPPING. Time to call FX

Appreciate everyone's input
