25 Dollar chronograph

Hello,

Yesterday I tried my new chronograph and did I get a surprise. I have a rifle that I can't get to shoot so I tried it first. I was led to think it was a powerful shooter. Well it shot the 14.3 JSBs at 644 FPS and the JSB 18.13 at 636 FPS. No too fast at all. However the spread from High to low was only 6 FPS with both pellets. I don't think a spread like that would be a factor in how poorly it shoots. I now have to look for some other reason it don't shoot.

I have not had time to try any other rifles. I questioned if I needed a chronograph or not, but now I can clearly see the value.

I would have to say that if the machine quits to day I have got my moneys worth. I think I might order another one to have a spare. Also another calculator as you have to convert readings from Meters to feet and then calculate foot pounds. I can't do it in my head.

God Bless

Bobby

I would say that your fps spread is excellent BUT is the actual fps point (velocity) going to produce the best accuracy in YOUR situation. YOUR SITUATION meaning you, the gun, and the pellet. If you have some abilty to tune that gun, I'd try higher velocity and I'd try other pellets before giving up.

@bulletbob is this the one you got? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001316688128.html

I would be concerned about the accuracy? It may be giving you a consistent reading? But a consistent reading that is wrong won't be of much help?

Normally most Chrono's feel cheap. (Caldwell, Competition Electronics etc...) But the value is in the calibration. I believe most of the name brand chrono's are +/- 0.25% accuracy.

Labradar and FX uses Dopler Radar. (like the police speed guns.)

Being $25 I might be a bit worried about the level of Quality Control.

Paint ball or Airsoft this should be O.K. but if you're tuning for precision?

A valid concern but this has been addressed. I verified mine against a ProChrono and it was amazingly close across multiple guns/velocities/pellets. No concern for your question, with my unit at least. Are all going to be the same? Don't know. Are all chronographs of any brand "the same"? Don't know. Mine seems accurate and that's all I can claim.

As to the question above about "clamping on the barrel"-yes, it seems that is what is intended. I don't do so and shoot over it on a table. They are small and this isn't particularly easy to do but it can work. Just don't shoot it.

The pictures in this thread are exactly what I have. .

I put masking tape on the barrel clamp and on the U clamp I put a small hose. So far no marks on the guns.

I have read good things about how good they work, but I have nothing to compare to.

I might at some point go a little higher end but for now I'm happy.

How could you use this devise clamped to the barrel if you want your POI to be the same as when shooting without it? IMO it would be useless for accuracy testing as such.

A point that I had not thought of. I always test one thing at a time. I have shot my guns a lot and have made careful notes of each target shot. So I know about the accuracy or lack there of. The chronograph is to further study why they do what they do. It also give me an excuse to play with my guns and make notes that I read over and over. It has been said that I overthink things so I reckon this proves the point.

I know that this machine is not for everybody. I was just shareing my pleasure at first use. It tells me things about my guns I did not know. I can now know how to procede.

I try to do this hobby as cheap as possible and still get good results. This cheap chrono that gives good results is another step down the road.

Agreed. But I never test for accuracy AND velocity at that same time. Seems one or the other testing group deisnt get testes as well as it should.

Shot groups, shot for FPS/MPS but not at the same time.

Yep, a "gotcha" question that didn't get anything. Different strokes.
