25 Cal Polymag Recovery

Hello all,

I thought it would be interesting to recover one of these 25 Cal Predator Polymags and see the pellet afterwards. This one was fired at about 785 fps/36 fpe from my new Edgun R5M Hornet. Range was about 12yd on a squirrel, passing through the side of the skull, angling down through the neck, and finally lodging, as they often do, just under the hide above the shoulder. One quick cut through the hide and the pellet pops out for inspection.

At this velocity, the expansion isn't terribly great but still useful, and the polymer nosepiece did not smash down into the pellet very far. You can see that the periphery of the nose did fold down and over the skirt. Since it was not a complete pass through, it dumped all of its energy.

I have the velocity dialed back on purpose to increase shot count and because it's all I seem to need at my typical bushy bash ranges. I feel using a Hill Mk IV hand pump up to 250 bar, which can be quite a work out so the extra shot count lets me shoot longer with less exertion.

I may eventually switch to the JSB heavies, which seem to be more accurate and have an awesome ballistic coefficient. I'm still doing accuracy evaluation at lower speeds, trying to find The Sweet spot somewhere between 650 and 700 feet per second. At these slow speeds, this heavy pellet is what I like to call a 'clobberbomb'. Probably won't expand much, but won't really need to.

I'm still doing pellet accuracy evaluation at 30 yards. At a slightly lower power setting, with the polymags going about 775 feet per second, they were grouping around 3/8 of an inch. Jsb heavies were better, with four out of five going into the same hole at 665 fps.

I am lubing all of my pellets with Krytech Finish Line wax. I need to swab the barrel before re-evaluating as the gun is brand new and I am still trying to choose the best compromise setup.

I may try also polishing the barrel with some JB bore paste.

So here is what a recovered Edgun/JSB heavy 34 grainer looked like. This one had a muzzle velocity of 710 FPS, and the customer at my 'table for one' was 30yd away, facing directly towards me. This pellet entered the squirrel's cheek, passed through the neck and much of the body, lodging under the hide on its back.

As expected, not much expansion, but it did not pass through, dumping all its energy. This guy did a serious backflip off the log!
