22 Gauntlet new to me as to tuning this platform

Only 4 modifications to the gun in just under a weeks time of owning this new gun and never have worked on this platform. I hate to buy aftermarket parts and would rather just do it myself. So, this is what I did,

1) Upped reg pressure to 1300psi

2) Removed .01" off poppet head

3) Opened throat to .221"

4 Shortened hammer spring .015"/.02"

3000psi to start with both runs and both runs were with 14.3 CHP's

100 shots using 14.3's at 21.5 fpe at a respectable 2.2 ES then opening that up coming off regulation to 860 fps for 23.5fpe, down to 802 fps for an additional 20 shots.

then

3000psi start and 1300psi end ( falling off reg )

Not too bad and I am starting to really like this Gauntlet. I would really like to shorten the barrel and turn it into a small light weight carbine.

Great numbers and good job tuning.

We have a .177, all it needed was some love and not ALL the work so many seem to think they need to really preform. As I had a spare high output Ninja reg/bottle - 1,100psi- I just screwed that on, adjusted the trigger and added 2mm jam.lock nut's to the trigger adjustment screws as admittedly I am running very little sear engagement - passes drop test-. 1,100psi ( factory 880spi) get's rid of the BURP and increases efficiency and tamed muzzle report. The reg set too low is the only thing they got wrong.

Not a bad rifle at all. If it had existed 10 years ago it would have dominated the market.

In these happy airgun saturated modern times when thinking of an airgun purchase I try to pretend they all cost exactly the same then rank them in order of what is wanted, list as many as I can in the category I'm considering then look at the price & compare features. The Gauntlet is VERY high on this list.

Now about that .25 Gauntlet regged at 1,300 with more flow than the .22/.177 , cant wait! $ for $ it will be the 50fpe ( think tinker ) value ever.

I did swap stock on mine as I like my QB stock better.

It would likely be usefull for some if you shared just how one slims down the factory poppet, well and porting and ...

John

John,

I have a small bench top lathe at the house but, I have a strong feeling a cheap drill press would be just fine using a file on the poppet head and chucking the valve stem in the chuck.

The throat is just behind the poppet on the valve. I guess you can open it up very carefully with a drill press too. Just chuck in an .02 bit backwards into the throat, gently chuck the sharp end of the bit into the drill press, then clamp the valve in the drill press vise. This is to align the hole to the throat. Lower the table with out moving left and right and remove the .02" drill bit. chuck in your larger drill bit properly (mine .221") and bring the table up and start drilling. Do not make the throat deeper, just wider.

Heck,

I did my first marauder valve throat with a battery hand drill and a vise. Opened it up to .25" and it still works like a charm. had to do some polishing on the seat but still works like a charm.

If anyone takes my advise on how to do something, please don't blame me that I messed you up? I am a hack but I am a safe as I can possibly be hack.

There was a big reason for me going in a different direction than other folks and tuners to get where I got. I can see where some people used their historical knowledge to try and improve (which works great - then you need this and that to make it work) but, I took a mathematical approach (more common sense too me). The throat is the restriction according to my calculations and by opening the throat allowed a higher efficiency (and power) because I no longer have to open the valve up as much to get the power. So that means my valve closes at the same speed but does not have to travel as far to get the power ( think short stroking ).

If I knew what I knew a week ago, all this would take less than an hour or less to complete.

I also made some K baffles for it too to replace that dumb mono-core. 5 of them fit and she is quite even at 27 fpe.

For size comparison, FDPCP to the right, then marauders going to he left and the the Gauntlet. Gauntlet shortest of all.

Chopped the barrel 5"'s and pulled a bunch off the shroud. I checked the choke on the cut off section is there was NO CHOKE.

Re-tuned the gun to just over 20fpe and ran 10 to a target at 25 yards.

Feels and looks great. Can't wait to start working on the stock.

Thanks BTB.

Good to see your still around too. Seems like AGN is a little bit different than GTA. Figured I would start slowly in here at AGN but, you know me. It's just gonna get better with every post.

A lot of different people here and seems "just" (different) than what I am used toover on GTA. I hope to fit in just nicely with what I know and the resources that I have to offer.

Again,

Thank you AGN for allowing me to join and post.
