.22 / .25

I’m just wondering is there any size difference between.22 and .25 pellets?? I am definitely new to this so go easy!! I know.177 and .22 are a big difference so I’m going to say that is twice as big????? Thanks any one can take a photo of the calibers side by side!!!

Yes, there is a difference. The sizes are approximately the barrel inside diameter (aka bore); thus, a .25 (1/4 inch) is .030 larger in diameter than a .22, and so forth. I'm sure there's a photo of all the popular sizes somewhere, but I'm having trouble finding it.

Really? There is a decent size difference between all of the calibers. .177 is .177 of an inch .22 is .22 of an inch .25 is .25 of an inch .30 is .30 of an inch ect.

.22 is 22/100" wide(diameter), .25 is 25/100" (or 1/4 inch diameter). .03 hundredths of an inch between 22 & 25 doesn't SOUND like a lot but makes a BIG difference when hunting. Watch YouTube vids (Ted's Holdover or Hunter One) & you'll see the dif.

Notice twelve of the .177 pellets sitting on a dime, and only 7 of the .22 pellets sitting on a dime, with 7 .25 pellets on a penny and a nickle. I did manage to get 12 of them on a quarter.

I found those pics the other night while looking for something else on my desktop. They brought back fond memories, as I took those pics back in 2013 when I bought my very first PCP. The .25 Syn-rod. 

It was like heaven after shooting my .177 Gamo Silent Cat and my .22 Umarex Octane! Must have had bad weather and been very bored when I took those photos?

From what I have read, an airgun's .22 is not a .22" sized projectile, it is a .217"-.218" slug to fit a .217"-.218" bore. And because my inquiring mind wanted to know, the bore of my Impact's .30 caliber slug liner just measured .298" swedging the slug down .002" from exactly .300"

Wow those pictures are great! Thanks ! Just trying to figure out if it’s reasonable to switch up to .25 when I have a boat load of.22 I have a springer and a piston in .22 and now I’m looking to get a pcp !! That I’m having a hard time figuring out especially for a beginner something under 500 dollars! Decision Decision!! Something I can pull out and be deadly up to 75-50 25 yards even at a 100 would be awesome!

To appreciate the difference in size between the calibers, I think it is more useful to look at it in terms of area…the size of the hole it makes, or the wound channel if you prefer to think of it that way. 



.22 is 50% larger than .177

.25 is 33% larger than .22 

.25 is 100% larger than .177 (okay 99% if we’re splitting hairs)



These are pretty significant differences.

You can use rounball size for each caliber to gauge the gains of moving up. 



.177 = 48cu. mm

.22 = 87cu. mm

.25 = 134cu. mm

Wish I still had that old Sony camera that took such good photos on macro setting. That was back in 2013 and the addiction is just as strong as it ever was.

Enjoyed shooting coins as well.

Ok so what will be good for hunting small game up to 100 yards I don’t care about shoot count I just want to hit the target I’m aiming at and some planking. .22 or .25 I already have a .22 cal rifle
