20fpe @ 125 yards....in the wind 😲

I needed to go out to the rangeland and decided to throw in some long range paraphernalia. 

Veteran Short in .22 shooting 13.43 gr JSB at about 815fps for 20fpe at the muzzle and about 6fpe at the target. 20x SWFA.

First off, this isn't any kind of impressive accuracy, just a fun experiment. 

In the first pic there's a lone juniper bush out there about where the gun is pointed, target is in front of and a little to the right of that tree. You can see said juniper in the rangefinder pic.

Holding phone to the rangefinder.......kinda works.

The results:

The round circles I was shooting at are just the outline of a tin 500 count of JSBs, so about 3 and 5/8inches across.

Top target has 10 shots, One of the shots is high and off the paper. I was just using holdover for these.

Bottom target has 19 shots. I cranked in all 85 clicks of elevation for this one. 

The only shots not on the paper were the first couple to figure out how much wind deflection I was getting. I could see the dust fly to the left and right of the box those first 4 or 5 shots and figured out where to hold based on that. 

All shots required between 2 and 3 mils of windage. With 20x scope, that put me holding about 2 feet to the left of the target.

Thanks Fuss. Pretty bare bones. That's about 3 miles from my house. Typically I enjoy the convenience of just shooting at home, but occasionally it's fun to stretch it out.

I bet your Taipan does .6" at 50Y. 1.25" at 75Y, 2" by 100Y, and so on. What like a .025BC going 815 fps.

Over at John's recently I was shooting at 100Y with my Impact 25 at 52fpe, .45 BC at 840 fps. Moderate winds from behind switching back and forth from side to side, wasn't easy hitting that 2.5" plate without the winds flags set up!!! I'd rather have wind coming from one direction that's for sure. My impact does .6" at 50Y in clam conditions so I can see a 20fps gun being that much harder at 125Y.

With the 22rf Anschutz I wouldn't have missed that 2.5" plate. It averaged .88" at 100Y doing six sets of 5 shot groups in a contest one time and .24" at 50Y. BC of .172 going 1100 fps.

The stark difference in accuracy was checking 100Y zero with my 6mmBR yesterday, little .6" group for 10 shots, but the cold bore shot hit .2" low. Then what happened "of course " was at 784Y the same thing that happened like at John's, just missing a 1' wide steel to the left and to the right as the wind switched back and forth, and also no flags set up to help. By the time I loaded the 2nd mag the wind started staying straight from 6 o'clock, ding, ding, ding, didn't miss afterwards and had 4" vertical.

Had I my old 375 Cheytac with .98BC going 3250 fps, I would have hit that 784Y steel in the same switching winds but at 1500Y no way.

Long range is all relative, depending on BC, fps, etc....

Yes, lots of fun! 

The Taipan groups about like you assumed. Although, Strelok seems to need a BC of about 0.029-0.03 for the predicted trajectory to match actual. 

It was surprising to see that it was harder to get the 20fpe .22 to group at long range than it was to get the 24-25fpe .20 to group a few weeks ago. Dunno if its the couple fpe difference, a better BC or what. I would have predicted a pretty comparable level of difficulty. The wind was actually more shifty on the day with the .20. I think I was just a bit over 100 yards when I was shooting the .20. So maybe all the small differences (slightly better BC, 25 yards closer, extra couple FPE) added up to make the .20 easier to group. Could also simply be that the .20 is a better bench gun than the short little Taipan. 

I always wonder what a particular barrel/pellet combo does to wind resistance, or lack thereof. The thought being that maybe certain patterns, not just depth, of rifling engraved on the pellets makes or breaks their wind resistance. Kinda like the dimples on a golf ball helping it cut through the wind versus the holes in a wiffle ball giving it the aeordynamics of a wadded up piece of paper. 

Either way, fun stuff. 

Ive hardly shot any of my powder burners in the last couple years, basically since I got serious into airguns. This little experiment has me curious to see what kinda groups I could get with the trusty old single shot, break barrel .223 that I shot so much as a teenager.

Were you there that day at John's when I was shooting the 30 cal EVOL at 200M and 289Y? 

Although my Impact shoots great inside 100Y, at 52 fpe my 25 cal Impact totally went to pieces farther out, at 200M it was hard to hit the chicken and pure luck to hit the 289Y diamond.

Bobby's Redwolf 25 did better at 200M and 289Y but not that good. It had a little more power than my 25 but he was shooting with the 25 grainers vs me shooting the 33's.

But that 30 EVOL at 80 fpe did amazingly well with the 44's??? Pretty easy to hit the chicken and not hard to hit the 7" diamond???!!! I was astounded, really I was! It was 6-10 mph winds so I had to aim 2-4 mils depending on which distance I was shooting at. If it had been calm I wouldn't have missed either of the steel targets much.

Twist rate, fpe, velocity, projectile weight, caliber, whatever the reasons, something was working way better with the EVOL that day??????? 

Probably if I tried a 700mm slug liner, was able to increase the power more, and shot at those same targets with the 33's, my Impact would do better, but how much better I don't know????

I've only been to John's once. That day, there were two .30 Safari's, your EVOL, and Bobby's Red Wolf. I was thinking Bobby had a .22 barrel in the Red Wolf that day but might be remembering wrong. All the airgun shooting happened on the range kinda behind his house,shooting east,up the hill. It was a nasty windy day but a ton of fun. Seems like the furthest we shot was 191yards,? up at the top of the hill. 

I remember shooting at those far targets and occasionally being able to see the pellets in flight, super cool. 

I also remember how surprised I was that we were able to hit those metal targets quite often.
