1st Wildcat casualty

Everything finally sat up to take the shot tonight at 10:30 without night vision. I have been up until midnight the last three nights waiting for the right opportunity. This skunk has been under our patio and it really has made it difficult to let the dog out back for fear she will take after the skunk. The city refused to take any part in relocating the skunk so out came the new wildcat. I have not owned an illuminated reticle before and the lit reticle really helped to make the shot possible. I turned the Athlon Argos reticle on #1 setting and it was just right for the shot to the head. JSB 25.39gr at 16 yards.

JDShapp, the skunk did spray. After I took the shot everything looked slow mo, the skunk tipped over, no violent thrashing about. I was really shock that it did spray.

I shot a skunk in the rump a few weeks ago, and it didn't spray. Knowing this and seeing your post, I'd go for heart/lung shots, going forward. When they lose muscle control from a brain shot, your bound to trigger a spray.

Had alot of skunks here on the farm. Headshots always seem to result in spraying. Body/vital shots seem to only spray 20% or less. Nothing like watching TV and getting a wiff of a skunk right outside. Use to happen all the time but not lately. I think I cleared em out. Nice gun and a very good shot too.

They are beautiful animals but quite a nuisance sometimes. A Skunk is digging holes in my lawn. Looks like he is feeding on yellow jackets and/or their larvae. Haven't decided yet if I want the yellow jackets or the holes.

A skunk is know to be quite a scrappy animal and in my situation, the skunk had dug a hole under the concrete and the last thing I wanted was a dead stinky skunk 6 or 8 feet under the concrete. I know that a vital chest shot kills animals but not always instant. A head shot 99.9 percent of the time is instantaneous. I have a .1 percent story I will leave for some other time. I needed to drop the skunk in his tracks, so a head shot was my best option.

LNielsen One quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide 1/2 box of baking soda
and a table spoon of dish soap. Mix together put in pump up sprayer. Will
kill the smell. Good chance you have more than one. If so next time when
it gets far enough from hole plug it. Don't let skunk see you and like Marksman
said body shot. Still no guarantees but most likely wont spray.

When i was younger we had about 5 skunks living under our house and when the city came out to remove them they first caught them in a live trap then shot them between the eyes with a 22 rifle rim fire and they never sprayed. When i ask about it he said he never had one spray when shot in the head. 
Makes me wonder...

Great info for alot of folks on here. I will try this out. I think it is nice that guys like yourself will share methods that help us out. Thanks Fuznut. A side note, I ran a 20 mile trap line that a friend had years ago. I remember he used bait that smelled like skunk and he was succesful with his traps. I found it odd at the time.

LNielsen Make and use fresh will go bad quick. Lots of things
will eat skunks, every time one does they spray. Passing predators
will check out skunk smell looking for scraps. Good luck and thanks.
