1st PCP, let down

A $2,000 .30cal backyard bird popper. There are much cheaper less complex guns that can handle that task. And they won’t leave you with expectations of long range bliss, which can be a black hole. Right now my Impact is a solid 70yrd everyday gun. That’s the distance I’m at where the gun performs all the time. Lots of lead. I will keep stretching it out and see where realistic every day accuracy stops. It’s a process, no shortcuts. All guns are different.

Welcome! I feel your frustration (if we can even call it that). You watch the YT vids of these incredible shots made with Gale force winds and the shooter blinded by the solar flare in the scope! Yes I was there too. But then I put in trigger time in. LOTS of trigger time (5000 pellets worth in one summer), and by God the accuracy started to come to me. Now I'm only shooting .177 out to 30m but I can have 1/8" groups when I do my part. It is all about learning the gun, reading the wind, and practice, practice, practice. You already know this as you obviously know how to shoot so that part is covered. I fight the weather here too (currently 2 feet of snow and temps struggling to get into the 20s). There is no "quick" fix or end all be all magic, just lots of pellets (or slugs if you rather) fired downrange. You will get there as you have a great platform to start from and a great knowledge base and plenty of experience to back you up. Please remember one important thing.... HAVE FUN!

Yep, PCPs are for technically minded people who like to improve things with trial and error. They put in the time to get to know the gun, experiment, and tune it bit by bit. They do not mind going back to the drawing board. PCPs are complex and fickle. Nothing to do with the simplicity and raw power of powder burners.

Perhaps a poll should be done with 2 questions:

1. What is your (former) profession:

o engineer or other technical profession

o doctor or other medical profession

o lawyer

o environmentalist

o other

2. Break down your time tuning vs. Shooting:

o 80/20

o 50/50

o 20/80

I have a hunch ...

***I don’t have enough time with this gun to really even answer this one yet, my main game is USPSA and building custom 2011 open guns, they are also finicky to get 9mm major guns to run reliably with 7lb recoil springs I really enjoy building guns and fitting/machining parts to make them work flawless, I am looking forward to the challenge of getting this hunk of aluminum to shoot acceptable.

The comparison is a .047 ballistic coefficient, 150 fps less velocity, and using a petcock projectile/pellet, vs match 22rf ammo using a 40gr bullet with a .15 BC at 1050 fps out of some of the finest rimfires ever made. That's a lot for a poor pellet to deal with at 150Y, even if it's 30 caliber.

If it's calm out, as long as you have a good barrel, a good tune with low ES, and a good batch of pellets, you can place hits pretty decently on like a 5" plate at 150Y, but when the wind kicks up be prepared to suffer quite a bit of vertical and holdoff 2-3 or more mils of windage.

In the benchrest forum look up Thomasair, I think his rifles using pellets have set the standard, but especially with his swaged slugs, this is about as close as it gets to meeting your goal. But then you are looking at $4000+ vs a $2000 Impact.

I will certainly be messing around with mine when I get some better weather. Biohazard was there any one thing you did that seemed to make the greatest difference when you started to tune, what slug liner twist ? I’m sure it will be a lot of trial and error on my part, Ken tuned it before sending it to me so the FX pellets were very consistent per his chrono sheet, it’s been snowing here so I haven’t set out my labradar to verify yet but I assume it would be close from FL to KS.

I lapped the barrel and that helped with not having to clean it every 200 rounds or so. Time between cleaning went up to 600 rounds and more as time went on. Tuning for max output then back 3-5% for a good harmonic tune is what really helped. Like Ted , Ernest, Bob, Air Hunters, Meathead Marksman and many others others show on their vids. My .25 barrel is an STX slug A barrel but I have seen others do the same as me with the Superior. The NSA and VK slugs in .25 and the 33.5, 34.and 36.2 helped as well. I did nearly as well with the JSB 33.95 MKII pellets as well. I also noticed an accuracy node as it were about every 20fps or so.

Since I did this with a .25 STX barrel and shot many one hole groups, on my first tune, at 50 with a Superior .22 I would think that most liners will do it. Although I did get a bad liner that would do 3/4 inch at 50 at it's best it was defective and returned. The new liner is shooting the one hole groups at 50 yards.

Naysayers need only open their eyes to see many people getting the same results on YouTube and on this forum. Not saying it was easy but it is worth the trouble when you finally, have the patients to, do it and reach nirvana.

This should probably be a topic but I hope enough guys read this topic and get the message. We are all quick to jump online and post pics of our latest great tune. I see them all the time whether someone is bashing a gun, asking about a gun or asking about a particular projectile, you will amazing pics of great groups. But the guys who post them never tell the story of what it took to get there. It’s like we don’t want to look stupid. Look what I did, it was nothing, I’m a master tuner. This is very misleading to new guys. We aren’t doing them any favors and are setting them up for frustration. I propose that from now on, when we want to boast about how dialed in our gun is, add a few sentences as to what it actually took to get there. Not about the tune itself, because that’s almost worthless. But about how many projectiles you have fired to get where you’re at and what you learned along the way. The pic of the tiny little group at 100 saying this is what my gun does with 36’s at 980fps really helps nobody. It misleads newbies.

Do we need to give a complete shooting and tuning resume with every post? I do not like to read people re-hashing every last step. There is a burden on the new guy to research? really? Yeah, I just went through that a few years back. I did not feel abused to have to look around to read on the internet, ask questions and get to know the people that I take advice from. It's called LIFE. Life is hard, and it's even harder when you go into it expecting it to be easy.

Agree completely. And it seems that every specific gun/ammo combination is going to be a bit different, much more so with any pellet shooter than rimfires. Advice is good, learning by doing is better.

I like this and agree, I am not looking for an easy button. My post was more to say these guns are cool for what they are, but I could tell from when I first picked it up that it isn’t any where close to a good RF like a vudoo or Rim-X. The lightweight aluminum feels like a toy rather than a 2k gun IMO. I do not know anyone with an impact nor ever seen one in person so this was my first impression of one and those are just my honest thoughts. I do look forward to warmer weather and tinkering with it though. Also want to say thx to the members on here, I was actually expecting to be made fun of a little more but you guys seem to be more genuinely helpful than being ass hats like on other forums. Lol.

A resume is a little extreme of what I was eluding to. Just simply this what I have been able to achieve with slug or pellet X and it took over 300 for me to finally settle on this tune. Or this came rather quickly and was able to get this in under 100 shots. I think we all forget what it was like to be totally green.

I have a nice CZ 452 long barreled .22 and it will shoot as well as my Impact only if I feed it $.20 a round target ammo. The Impact slugs are about $.06 and it will match the CZ with good ammo shot for shot at 100 yards. I actually plink at 200 yards with my Impact. Shooting spray paint cans off of the target stands at the range.

Try Aguila super extra hv

My CZ 452 loves it.

Everyone should arlt least own an Eun Jin Seneca Sumatra Long PCP for 100 yard shooting. This gun in 25 caliber is very hard to beat straight out of the box like the old Career II 707s. Even the old FX Tarantulas in 22 and a handful of barrel lottery Theoben Rapids in 20 and 22 and 25 caliber all guns mentioned in this reply are older unregulated discontinued guns.
