1st PCP, let down

This is not a complaint post just more of an honest up front post if someone was in my position. I really enjoy shooting 22 Rimfire vudoo and Rim-X rifles on my home range out to 260 yards. With the current ammo situation I was on the hunt to find an alternate work around. I decided to go with an FX impact in 30. I may have been a bit swayed by all the YT vids of guys posting great groups out to 150 etc. granted I have not spent a ton of time and have had less than optimal weather conditions here with the storm front rolling in, but so far I have not been very impressed, I will do a lot more testing and tinkering but I doubt that this will be any kind of a substitute for a quality 22LR. That being said I was shooting a KYL rack at 85 yards and a blackbird landed about 30 yards behind my rack in a tree and was able to take him out on the first shot. I am just looking for something that will consistently shoot .75 or less at 100. After all it is just a pellet rifle so my expectations may have been set too high.

I think more guns will do.75@ 100 yds then shooters. Its the shooters ability and how well he can read the wind. Usually the gun is always better.

That is a good point, that is actually the reason I ended up getting the 22 trainer rifles so that I could practice wind calls at home and transfer that skill over to the PRS game, it appears the wind is even a bigger factor on pellets/slugs so that may be a bonus to practice wind calls since I am able to actually see the pellet in flight.

Reading the wind. This is a 5 mph crosswind and the effect on a jsb 25.4 @ 950 fps @ 100 yds.

Try NSA slugs. I have been shooting NSA 49.5gr. Slugs out of my .30 Impact. They are extremely accurate at 50 yard. I have not been able to shoot them at longer ranges yet. I have been shooting NSA .25 caliber slugs for years and they extremely accurate so I imagine the .30 cal will be too ! Check out Airbuks or Airhunter Gerhard tuning guide on YouTube. The more air efficient the Impact is the more accurate it tends to be .

no doubt there are some guns 'that can' put them in small groups at those ranges but in the real world air rifles shine under 50 and the ideal is 25-30, and in their prime kll zone range alot of pcp's will probably outshoot the majority of rimfires ... this just hapoens to be the prime hunting and pesting range to ... so maybe re-evaluate your expectations and your satisfaction level wil probably go way up .. '250 yard targeting' though is really not airgun territory lol ...

My longest shot for myself has been 130 yards. Often times it was with my Vulcan in .25. I hit my mark most of the time, and if I miss my target then its more then likely my fault. It could be simply me moving around to much because I often times use my body as a rest, or I just don't account for wind. It could also be a bad pellet every once and a while. As soon as my shooting locations open up Ill be taking the new EvoL hps out ill be going for 200 yards and even 300 just for the hell of it. I might even see if I can push that. I was in the same boat you were when I got into air guns. Powder burner ammo was hard to come by, or it would cost several hundreds of dollars every time I wanted to go out and shoot. Ammo for air guns is cheep in comparison next to live ammo. Granted I do not have anything bigger then a .25. My first was a Marauder in .22. That impressed considering it was just a pellet gun, At least thats how I seen it at the time anyway. Moded the hell out of the Marauder with a new Marmot M barrel, all sorts of porting and valve work, even got a bullpup kit for it and a Lane regulator. Not to mention other things to help with efficiency and the making the trigger a bit better. Was it worth it in the end? well, yes and no. I learned a lot but I also spent enough to get a far, far nicer air gun. It shoot very well I must say. I did let it go for $600 complete with an MTC scope on it to a friend. So now he is enjoying it and I still get to shoot it. So get different pellets/slugs and see what works best. You may even want to tune it a bit to suit your needs. Those impacts are tinkering kind of air guns.

You’re not the first victim of YouTube videos and you won’t be the last. I think I’ve said this about 20 times in the last month but with an airgun, your hobby won’t be shooting long distance with it, your hobby will be getting it to shoot. Videos don’t show the journey to some bragging groups or all the wounded animals from long bomb shots. Long range accuracy with a powder burner is a walk in the park compared to an airgun. Not sure if the guys who produce these videos know it or not but they are preying on the gullible.

Justin, yes your expectations were probably not realistic. That doesn't mean you can't have a lot of fun with it, but in no way should you expect it to match the performance of top-shelf RF rifle with good ammo. Heck, when you consider you're at the mercy of a complex system of valves, O rings, springs, etc., be thankful for a day without an operating issue. And don't forget the sage advice of my then 10 year old son many years ago. I was frustrated at the range, he noticed and said, "Dad, don't worry about it, just get a bigger target!" Truer words were never spoken.

👆Too true

My .25 impact with 700mm slug liner often shot .5 to 1 inch groups at 100 yards and I have seen many others do the same so it's not like it can't be done. Mine is now a short barreled .22 compact. Shot thes one hole groups the first day out while tuning at 50 yards.

Link to another post where I shot several .5 inch groups in a row one day. With several slugs and one pellet. I was a good day for me. Scroll down for the targets.

Thank you all for the comments this is a great forum of people. I am not disappointed like it may came off sounding just that this is in no way an alternative to a high end RF. I love to tinker tune and mod all my rifles so I am sure I will still have a hell of a good tome with it, just lowering my expectations of what it’s capabilities are and people should be aware that this will not replace a good 22 RF. That being said I’m sure myself and my kids will enjoy plinking and shooting birds in the back yard for quite a while and cheap.

See, even biohazardman leaves out the part about the 120lbs of lead that it took for him to become proficient at getting his gun to produce several great groups on a good day. The devil is in the details that unfortunately airgunners are leaving out. Thus making it look easy to the late night internet surfer.

Yup I sure did shoot allot of lead to get that thing tuned to shoot that well for sure. Over 500 rounds for the first tune. Less now that I know what I am doing, Once it is there though it will shoot like that for several hundred rounds till the barrel gets good and dirty.

I will certainly be messing around with mine when I get some better weather. Biohazard was there any one thing you did that seemed to make the greatest difference when you started to tune, what slug liner twist ? I’m sure it will be a lot of trial and error on my part, Ken tuned it before sending it to me so the FX pellets were very consistent per his chrono sheet, it’s been snowing here so I haven’t set out my labradar to verify yet but I assume it would be close from FL to KS.
