177 R1 velocities???

I had a super tuned R1 in .177 that broke the sound barrier. Over 1100 fps with 7.0 basic lead pellets. It was a screamer. Didn’t like the ballistic crack it made in my old back yard.

How was the accuracy at that velocity? It sounds like a good choice for a heavier pellet. Or better yet try that R1 with a .20 cal barrel.

I had a .20 caliber R1 at the same time as this .177 screamer. I did try to get a .22 barrel for the .177 but couldn’t find one. The .20 R1 was not accurate or efficient. Never did try swapping the barrels. Got rid of both for favoring the 95. My experience is that when a magnum in any given caliber reaches velocities over 1000 fps the accuracy falls off and the internals are over stressed. Not to mention the “hold sensitivity” is outrageous. Probably some of the the reason for the accuracy drop.

Having tuned many R1/HW80's over the years, I can tell you the 177 version needs to be in the 850 fps range to keep accuracy. The piwer plant in that rifle is designed for bigger/ heavier pellets. Best results typically came from the 22 cal version as far as making the best power and accuracy. My own personal R1 started out as a 177 but accuracy suffered when taking advantage of the rifles power. Switched to a 22 barrel and things began to look much better. Ended up cutting the barrel to remove the choke and accuracy really improved after a custom tune. That was almost 20 years back, today it still shoots CP 14.3 pellets at 825 fps and has shot many sub one inch groups at 50 yards!! Nothing wrong with 177 but these rifles were made for high power with heavier/ bigger pellets to get their best performance. You can detune to improve the accuracy in 177, but your wasting much of the energy the rifle was designed for.

Thanks I agree 100%. I appreciate your input. I'm just trying to collect information to make sure my gun is making caliber appropriate power before I do anything with it. There's a long story behind the purchase and tuning of my R1 that I won't bore you with. It was bought in original 177 condition with the intention of rebarreling it to 20 caliber. I personally don't see much advantage to it over my 177 Hw95 or after rebarreling it over my 20 caliber R9. There's a lot of R1 fans out there, but after owning one don't see the allure. Thanks again for your input.

The most popular allure to the R1 is in the 22 cal version. For some reason the 20 was typically not a tack driver even though there are some that are. Of the many R1 that I worked on over the years, the most effiecient and accurate were the 22 cals. Most of my sucess with those came with removing the choke but it was only sucessfull with the 22 cal barrel. As heavy as those rifles are, might as well utilize all the power you can get !!

Good to know. Never had any experience with the R1 in .22 caliber. I did cut the choke out of a .177 caliber. It shot amazingly good. Shot it in an informal league in the 80’s. Never shot the R1 like I do the 95. Just couldn’t recommend an R1 to anyone new to this sport. Thank you.
