( . . . I didn't even know there was an 'RD' variant of these until I started searching just a bit ago. )
Scenario: I just wrapped up an 'experiment' of using Griffin 13g slugs out of this gun - Taipan Veteran Standard. At around 847 fps they actually shot, really, not half bad. I was taking sparrows out at one of my farms with them at up to 50 yards. If I had to grade them - overall I'd have to give them a 7 or 8 out of 10. Kinda pricey though.
So -- I finally shot all of them off and am now going to play with a batch of the subjected 13.4 monsters. I got 4 tins (buy 3 get one free deal from PA). Upon finishing up with the slugs, I gave the barrel a quick cleaning and indeed the first two patches through were quite dirty. ( patch worm kit ) Happy with the barrel clean I then loaded up my magazines with my tin of 'plinkers'. I weigh and sort my pellets - and the 'plinkers' are any weighing less than 13.30 or any above 13.59. I'm going to keep and shoot 13.3, 13.4, and 13.5's. Knowing that the first 10-20 of the plinkers are going to just be re-leading the barrel . . . I have no real hopes of consistency or super duper accuracy yet . . . they ain't half bad at 40 yards. I run some though my chrony and they're running 860's . . . . I start dialing it up and (apparently) 874'ish is about the best I'm going to get out of them with the current regulator setting. I start dialing the scope to see if I can 'set a zero' at 40 yards - and again - these are 'plinkers' - weights are all over the place. They're grouping surprisingly well . . . daylight is gone but I'm reasonably happy with the very little bit of experience / testing I've had with them to this point.
I come upstairs and get on the computer to start searching / get an idea as to what the 'ideal' speed is for these pellets. Turns out ( and this is what I'm looking for confirmation from you guys on ) that they prefer to go 850-860'ish? My knee jerk was to try to throttle them up to a more 'typical' pellet speed at 880-890'ish.
I'm going to throttle them back down tomorrow after work, and with a more consistent set of pellets weight wise - not the plinkers - and see if they do tighten up at slightly slower speed. If in fact they do fly better at slower speed then I'll take that as an additional plus in that it'll help with efficiency too - I'll get 50, 60, maybe more shots per fill.
Those of you who have shot / or use the 13.4's (not the RD's - they apparently shoot differently and maybe like different speeds?) - do you concur on slower speeds with these?
