There is also a UK U-Tube that shows the wound channel of .177 compared to higher calibers. The difference is not significant.

Have you seen tests comparing .177 slugs to pellets? Slugs in .177 are normally at 28-30 ft.b at the muzzle, pellets at 12-20 FtLb, especially if a HP variety... The pass thru or miss damage from slugs is far greater in pesting environments and normal airgun ranges. At ranges where slugs excel they are not tremendously effective in terms of energy dump in .177. The new slugs from NSA May very well change that. I am anxious. From my observations, longer range pesting is more suited to .22 and .25. The ammo dumps energy more effectively at those ranges.

That said I have placed .177 slugs between the ear and eye of groundhogs at 93 yards with .177 slugs and seen them just slump. It was opportune and not the norm though.

There are lots of super knowledgeable folks on this site. I am only sharing what I have done and seen with candor.

My favorite springer is a .177 and I shoot it daily.

My PCP and all future rifles will be in.22 to future proof them. I just think that the ever expanding government will eventually ban lead projectiles of all kinds. I don't care about the actual science behind it and neither does the government. Most of the .22 rifles I have shot with GTO's are reasonably accurate. Nothing above 7 FPE has shot well for me with any alloy pellet and mid-powered springers feel harsh with a 5.6 gr pellet. So for me, future proof = .22 caliber.

I do wonder if a 14 FPE springer in.20 caliber shooting a 9.5 gr alloy pellet could be the magical unicorn that springer shooters have always wanted.

.177 slugs ..... If you can't push em hard enough to take advantage of the hollow point opening up on game ? .... modify the HP so it does open up at lower speed.

Shot my first ground squirrel yesterday with a "redrilled tip" 12.5 NSA at @ 42 yards, shot at @ 910fps. Hit him on the diagonal behind the front shoulder where exit should have been approximately opposing side mid gut .... NO EXIT !!

This was telling the slug opened up. Similar shots with 10.3 or 13.4 JSB are always pass threws like an ice pick. Not with these modified slugs they don't !

Nice, I was just thinking about the possibilities of doing that, Scott. What is you drilling method?

I made a simple jig by drilling a piece of 3/4" nylon rod with a pilot hole for the .073" drill then a secondary hole of @ .177" @ .200" deep ( total length @ 3/4" as well )

Light pressure presses the slug into the larger hole lightly wedging it in place. Small electric drill with a .073" drill bit now placed in the other end.

Drill contacts end of slug where HP is already at ... light pressure and high drill speed opens the hole up being very easy to feel when it bottoms out.

Stop drill & push the slug out of the fixture & remove from end of drill ... Done.



Done this way the hole is kept perfectly centered and square .... works like a charm !!

I spoke with Nick already .... Making the HP cavity larger in these little .177's CANNOT be done due to EXTRACTION issues using the high speed machine in manufacturing them.

So Don't ask him ! .... my little mod is something I required and figured a way to better use these little .177's for pesting duty only.
