100 yards with a Thomas

Changed out the barrel and shot 22 RD Monsters at 915. Wind is still heavy...but wasn’t switching as much. Was more patient too.

This may be a better setup, too. Hard to say, yet.

Looking good. I like the bottom right target! The Top left is 44 not 46. But 222 is still damn good. I personally think the RD Monsters in .22 is the pellet of choice for 100Y BR.

if the .22 barrel is a Poly, try the RDs at about 960 to 970 FPS. They seem to like that speed best in the Red Wolf LW Poly barrel.

Nah, I don’t plug on my own scores. I know they do plug to .350 at RMAC and EBR but plugging is a hassle for practice rounds. I shot a 234 with RD Monsters in my Bleu Wolf a couple weeks ago that would have plugged close to 238. I’ll just be surprised by my competition scores. ;) But I see your point. Makes sense if you want comparable scores for EBR type competition. My goal is to consistently break 230 without plugging. Should do well at RMAC and EBR if I can do that.

Ok...I see. I’m always shooting different calibers. I don’t necessarily plug my practice targets...but my eye knows what they should be if they were plugged. I like to score my 25m cards through the scope so if the scorer comes up with something different, I’m ready.

I did turn a bunch of .350” plugs...so if you want one let me know. They have a .220” stem.

I put my Leupold 40x on the gun and tried a 25m card at 100y. The Leupold is clearer than my Sightron 36 bench scope....plus it has dots every 2.2 MOA. That helped me a great deal. My kestrel was reading nothing under 20mph...and gusts up to 35. The local weather station was similar. I shot some groups before I hung this target...and the gun was shooting well with the 22 RDs at 945. My goal was to just get a pellet inside the target box...which is a little under 2x2. I double shot 2 boxes....I think my big dots must have been covering up the first shot. It’s easy to lose track on these little cards. Anyway, I’m not too disappointed given the conditions. My range faces south.

Ok

.so here is the last piece of the puzzle. The 30 caliber setup. I got some new pellets and shot a 35 shot group in fairly steady wind 10-12 mph still from 1:30...leaning a bit to 2:00. Looks like 26-27 shots that would easily be less than 1” ctc. I’m pleased with that. So customer will be getting a 22, 25, and 30 cal setup that will do what it’s supposed to. The 22 is killer at 50y, too. 😀

Shot these two over coffee this morning. Wind 6-9 mph from 1-2 o’clock. I put another target below these so I would have to go up and down like the real match. My rest is painfully slow at that, and I’m certain that is something where a significant speed improvement could deliver better scores. I’m not interested in shooting from a bipod....so I would just make my rest faster. Shot about 10 sighters per card. These were plugged with a .350” plug, to obtain an comparable score to those that would be shot in competition. I very much believe that with a little practice I could do quite well at this game. I have made significant improvement in just the week or so I have been doing this. The gun is rock solid, so I think most gains will now come from learning the best shooting strategy. 22 RD Monsters. Sorry they are upside down.

That's what I'm saying. No idea about RMAC or PAC but EBR only plugs to the largest USED, not allowed. Last year was 30 cal. I'm not speaking for AOA, but I think they were contemplating not allowing .35s this year. I guess we'll see soon enough.

Still... excellent shooting and I really enjoy your posts. Do you have any problem with leading? I'm struggling with it on my RW and have polished, waxed, and lubed pellets in varios ways to test. I thought it was going good with the Carnauba wax but still leading up after 100 or so.

For the last cleaning, I looked at it w my bore scope and there was some on the choke but biggest chunks were about 8" from breech. I've heard some theories of flakes from the manufacturing process being "ironed into" the bore during the shot cycle but the whole bore is polished and waxed. I have it running 970 - 980 w the 25.4s right now as that seems to be the best at long range. I'm sure it would be less of a problem at lower velocities but I have it where it needs to be. Just need to find the right lube, I guess.

Do you clean before every session?

Bob

I will clean each session if I have to. I have not cleaned the 22 at all since I began testing. I’m sure it has 1000 pellets through it by now.

I suspect the leading near the breech is velocity related. I’m assuming you are cleaning every 100 to stave off flyers. You might try spot cleaning...just trying to remove the lead in one location so you can determine which area may be causing the trouble.

Have you tried “lubing” your pellets with your cleaning solvent? That works sometimes.
