I use pin gauges to check bore size. Any of the prong type or ball type wouldn't be accurate due to rifling. I bought a set of pin gauges .060 to .250 on Amazon for around $85.00. But I use them for machining, it may not be worth the cost for you.

There is a product called aluminum black, not sure if that's the color you are looking for. 

As more states add air rifles as acceptable weapons for hunting I believe restrictions such as ffls are next.
