I got the AT-44 S/B after evaluating much competition, and despite being a short barrel, most of what you said is still true. Well, save for the weight, not having the weight extending way out really helps. Of course it won't have the same kind of reach, though.

Personally, Crossman Premier HP. I can do 20 yard dime-sized groupings with the first 30 shots filled to 2000 psi.
