    Heart shot!

I've taken to making headshots when possible - especially at ranges right around 50 yards where my scope is dead on - but this one had his head behind a tree.

    Heart shot!

I'm starting to prefer my crossbow if I am hunting somewhere I expect the range to be short. I've lost both deer and hogs for not having a trail to follow. Never a problem with the crossbow and Sevr broadheads.

    Heart shot!

Well, I would say I hit that one just right. I'm using a .457 Texan CF slinging 350 grn NSA boat-tails. Shot was at 37 yards. Entered right behind the leg and exited through the opposite front leg. NO blood trail to follow, so I had to do a grid search. He was dead before he ran off and just...

    12 Y/Os first deer

I was using the NSA 350 grn boat-tails. He hit too high in the sholder. It hit the scapula and deflected sideways, traveling through the guts and out the butt. The Carbine shoots the 350 at about 780 fps for around 470 ft/lb of energy. Evidently not enough to punch through a little doe's...

A question for those of you that hunt squirrels in the woods

It's a nice feature to have, as you never know what the lighting for a shot will be until you start to take it. "Vital"? Hardly - billions of squirrels were shot before illuminated reticles.

    12 Y/Os first deer

My room-mates 12-year-old son came over from the Bahamas for Christmas, and I took him out stalking hogs and sitting for deer. No hogs, but he did manage his first-ever deer. Just a little doe, but for me, it was like he dropped a 12 point. So happy to put a young man on his first. He got it...

OK, so I did something stupid....

Never mind, found the Air Venturi website - finally - and the manual online.

OK, so I did something stupid....

I have the Air Venturi 4500psi compressor. I went to fill my air tank back up to 4500 psi, so I could fill my Texans for hunting today. I hooked it up, closed the bleed valves, turned on the fan, then turned on the compressor. Where stupid comes in was failing to open the dag-blasted tank...

    Hogs Ate My Golf Course

The advice stands, despite the poor attempt at humor. I recognized what you were attempting - just passed over it as not funny.

Photo Thread: Quarry and the Airgun that Took It

A couple with the .457 Texan Carbine.

    Hogs Ate My Golf Course

Someone said look both ways before shooting. I would ensure you know all the laws in your area before shooting. Here in GA, one must have written permission ON THEIR PERSON when hunting someone else's private land. Also, down here, it is illegal to shoot from or across a road. For us, that even...

    Best air gun for hunting?

I own the Texan .457 CF in both the carbine and full length. I've taken both hogs and deer with the carbine (just got the full length and haven't gotten anything with it yet) With the problems I have had getting a pass-through and blood trail with the carbine (about 500 ft/lb) I would not be at...

    Corn thief neutralized

Didn't think about trying to dig the slug out.

    Corn thief neutralized

Thank you. I'm getting better at following just tracks. It helps when the ground gets wet and softens up. He had a wallow in a palmetto thicket almost as deep as he was. I might not have seen him if I hadn't gotten down on a knee to check what I thought was a track through the pine straw.

    Corn thief neutralized

Same. NSA 350 grn boat-tails. Lung shot while moving. No pass-through and no blood. Heard him crash, but didn't find him until the next morning, so no meat off this one. Just glad he's gone.

    Benjamin Bulldog .357 Deer Hunting?

Lack of a blood trail has been a problem for me. At first, I was shooting Mr Hollowpoint 300 grain out of my Texan Carbine .457 CF. The problem was I almost never got a pass-through. Even on a small doe, the bullet dumped all its energy in her lungs. She only made it about 25 yards in relatively...

    Benjamin Bulldog .357 Deer Hunting?

    Not necessary.

    Corn thief neutralized

This one has been stealing corn at my club for quite a while. Got him on camera right after a couple of days of rain and managed to track him back to his bedding spot. The .457 carbine did him in as he tried to make an exit. No more corn thieving for this one. He had gotten fat off raiding our...

    How many hunt deer

I have gotten three deer so far with the Texan. Maybe a dozen or more hogs.
