Yeah, leaking fill port is the most common leak, on some Fosters valves I've found the Urethane O-rings hardened or rotted out, I use Buna Nitril dura 7 or 9 on them instead, most are size #6, some are #5, then some times just a few drops of Silicone oil will fix the leak, re-moisten the O-ring...

I use Silicone oil on a rag and spin the poppet in a drill and apply pressure to the sealing surface with the oily rag, allowing it to get very warm, I also use Scotchbrite pad on the metal part

Yes, On many PCP rifles, if the hammer is "not cocked", they will leak air through the poppet valve and through the barrel, the poppet valve is the main Valve that holds the air back from the barrel chamber, if the hammer is not cocked and resting on the poppet shaft, it might have enough spring...

Have you tried cocking the gun before filling with air, could be the hammer resting on the poppet shaft.

if you are going to use a linkage for the trigger, hit up your local Hobby shop, they should have model airplane control rods and clevises/Heim joints that would work great.
