Agreeing with 'cmatera'... I have used a camera flash on glow-in-the-dark items many times! I have not tried a smartphone flash, LED style. But, using my Canon Speedlite 220ex (hot shoe) it has a 'pilot' button so I can use it without the camera. Many mfgs have a pilot, test, or check button... -
