Tuning A tuning test for the experts

The only shots that matter are the ones fired on target. If you have 10 record shots at 100 yards with a 41 fps spread, the results will probably be disappointing. If that spread is the result of shooting beyond the reg set point, or the plateau of a non-regulated rifle, then it's a manageable...

    Cleaning the Bore?

Assuming good quality pellets and a good bore, it's been my experience that barrels seldom need cleaning. One variable is velocity, and since many folks are pushing these soft pellets ever faster, I expect there is a speed at which most of them will begin fouling at a more frequent interval...

    One shot, one kill

The HW100 is a really solid rifle. Mine is my yard rifle. With close neighbors, I tuned it down to around 11 fpe. At that level, it's almost silent, and the shot count is tremendous.

    One shot, one kill

The Taipan is a great choice, and it is one of mine as well. On equal footing is the Royale 400 and RAW HM 1000. For backyard pest duty I include my HW100 in .177, tuned to 11 fpe.

N/A My biggest aggravation in PCP guns ..so far..

From experience, I can recommend 3 very stable rifles: FX Royale, RAW, and Taipan Vet 1.

Umarex How does this barrel crown look?

I have a supply of JSB and AA 10.3's, and I don't believe that I have encountered these new and different pellets. Is there an easy way to differentiate these from the old ones? You mentioned "new packaging". Is it obviously different? Sounds like I might be in for some pellet testing if these...

    POI shift ?

If you shoot 20 rounds to zero a cartridge rifle, the barrel heat will affect POI to the point of influencing an incorrect zero. Depending on barrel profile and stock fitment, the effect can be minor or substantial. But I agree, whether air rifle or firearm, most of us don't shoot enough to...

    POI shift ?

I believe that anything that fires a projectile through the air is subject to a risk of POI change. Environmental factors will have an influence, but the effects should be relatively minor. That said, I have seen extreme temperature change result in POI shift that was enough to warrant a scope...

N/A Thinking of a high shot count .177

Both are quality rifles. I've owned both, still have the RAW. It's simple, strong, easy to maintain. In today's market of constant change, some folks look at the RAW design as dated. Well, there is a reason for not changing good stuff.

N/A Thinking of a high shot count .177

I have a HW100 in .177 also. I tuned it down to around 11 fpe and it has a tremendous shot count. I've never counted, but for my yard shooting and pesting it goes months between fills.

    Regulated or Non-Regulated

Regulated guns have become the norm among higher end air rifles, but I'm not sure that is really justified in application. If shot-to-shot consistency is critical for your use, and the number needed is greater than the sweet spot can provide in a non-regulated rifle, than a regulator is of real...

Thomas Air Damaged skirts, does it really matter?

Bent skirts matter.... sometimes. I think the real questions are, how much, and to whom? If you are a competitive shooter, it's foolish to take a chance with them. If you are a casual shooter or plinker, one might think it foolish to take the time to repair them. I can shoot bottle caps at 25...

    HW97 UPDATE

I have a HW97 in .177. It has a Vortek kit and is shooting around 700 fps also. I don’t shoot it often, but it's a great rifle. I have relatives in the NC mountains who like to shoot, and I take the HW97 when we visit. It's perfect for that kind of travel, just grab the rifle and pellets and go!

    Chronograph Advice

If the sensors are clean, exact placement isn't critical, as long as the pellet can be "seen" by the the sensor. If not, you will know immediately by no reading, or some error reading. If you do a lot of testing indoors, I can recommend the Magnetospeed chrono. It needs no light for operation.

    New Need Help Choosing Rifle

I have a Weihrauch HW97 and it is a great shooting rifle. I shoot my PCP rifles almost exclusively, but I can recommend the HW97 if you want an underlever. Regarding the storage of a regulated PCP rifle, I asked a custom maker in whom I have confidence about it. He recommended storing the rifle...

Taipan Baptized the new Taipan Vet 2 today

Bronze brush is fine, but better not to reverse direction in the bore. Nylon is sufficient for soft lead fouling.

Taipan Baptized the new Taipan Vet 2 today

In my experience, few air rifle barrels foul to any substantial degree. That might be changing with increasingly powerful rifles and soft lead slugs. If fouling is present, it can usually be seen with the naked eye and good light, since its usually near one end, either at the chamber leade, or...

    Airgun insurance??

I'm not an insurance expert, but I assume that a personal umbrella liability policy would cover shooting-related damages for which you might have liability. I have a policy from the same company as my homeowner policy.
