Sightron SIII FIELD TARGET 10-50X60 IR Why is it so recommended/used for field target?

The only 60x FFP scope I have ever seen is a March Genesis ($6000).

    LabRadar

If the .177 has any detectable recoil, an inertial trigger might work. I get some errant readings when I bump or move my gun as that will trigger the Labradar. The .177 is more of a short range airgun round. Labradar is probably not well suited for that. Even if it triggers, it will not be able...

    LabRadar

That’s a great deal for a Labradar. I’ve had mine for a few years. I added an SD card, an aftermarket inertial trigger, and a rechargeable external battery pack. It’s reliable. I mostly use the built in screen and SD card rather than the Bluetooth app. There are now a number of <$1000 Doppler...

    How long is too long?

It’s certainly possible that 600mm was the “sweet spot” for that particular tune. While a different tune might use an 800mm barrel for the “sweet spot”.

Re-"design" a new Field Target game

An “extra target every 2 or so lanes” is more money to spend and more work setting courses. It’s not really necessary when we already have two targets per lane, one easy and one hard.

    How long is too long?

The barrel length limit for my latest build was set by the length of the gun case that I already had. I left enough room for 1” of padding on each end of the rifle. Long black case for .308 with 61” barrel:

Re-"design" a new Field Target game

I was an FT match director for 10 years and agree that beginners should be encouraged by being able to knock down a good number of targets. With two targets per lane, I tended to set the closer targets for the beginners. The current GP rules discourage that practice as it makes it near...

    How long is too long?

When it’s only for benchrest or prone shooting what’s too long? 61”? This airgun is intended to shoot 150gr to 180gr .308 slugs at near sonic velocity.

    How long is too long?

Maximum FPE is limited by pressure and barrel volume. Assuming you have full control over the valve dwell, and sufficient plenum to maintain adequate pressure, longer will always perform better and/or be more efficient. It becomes a trade off for cost, ergonomics, and necessary follow through. A...

Pellets vs 1st Gen vs 2nd gen slugs

Gen1 BC cutoff about 0.12-0.15? Assuming that’s for a G1 BC? What’s the cutoff for a gen2? And rather than G1, gen2 is probably more like RA4. Or maybe G7?

From which point do you range your targets?

There are two points of interest when ranging and calculating the trajectory and the needed compensation. Drop/windage calculations are from the rifle’s MUZZLE. Drop/windage compensation is from the scope’s GIMBAL. Those two points can be far enough apart on an airgun to make a difference in...

N/A 20fpe springer, or just under, from the factory for FT

I used a Diana 54 back in 2014 and 2015. 10.3gr@900fps. I won a lot of AAFTA piston matches with it.

Hunter field target Scope-Hi power or low for ranging?

“…must be turned to 16x or nearest” would preclude any lower settings. Though the rules say otherwise, most match directors allow you to adjust the scope during the match in order to use lower magnifications. So the following is usually allowed. “Variable scopes of greater than 16X must be...

    2024 Northeast Airgun Classic Results

Was the Squatch big bore ELR event shot prone or from the benches? Half the targets at 640yds+. Wow! And a few of the competitors hit a couple of those far targets. What became of the Squatchbomb small-bore event? As I did not see results for that.

    Fun day shooting ELR airguns

We were blessed with good weather yesterday, as Rod Java made an early morning trip from San Francisco to meet me at the SLOSA range Smallbore clubhouse. The adjacent ranges were busy, which limited our down range access to set targets. But we had an electronic indicator on a 223yd target and we...

Skout Sniper Slug - Official Release

10 to 50 milliseconds is a long dwell time. Maybe by a factor of 10. I’ve got a Skout but have not investigated exactly how it’s valve actuates, so maybe there is a delay during the process, requiring a relatively long dwell time. Normally, the projectile in a PCP is long gone after 10 milliseconds.

FX True Ballistic Chronograph - Testing & Results

Ballisticboy, Right on. It’s overkill if I just want a convenient way to get muzzle velocity, but I like my Labradar a lot. At the range, it gives multiple distance velocity readings, which is nice, but most of the work happens later. At home, I transfer the Labradar SD card to my computer and...

Scope rings - lapping or tape it

Before the rings are lapped, they are mounted securely on the rifle in their intended position. Subsequent lapping compensates for any misalignment in the system, not just the scope rings. If you mount those rings on a different rifle, they should be lapped again after moving them.

Good memories of Mike from that 2019 match. He had his own sense of humor. I looked forward to seeing him when I went to AZ matches. I’ll miss him. Scott Hull
