Yeah cleaning the barrel when you first get it is a good idea. I just got a refurb'd Hatsan FlashPup in .25 and the barrel took a good 8 patches to clean it out. Shot pretty good before but completely impressed with accuracy and a slight tune afterwards.

Edit: Just read about your theory about hammer bounce back being the cause of the puff of air. That makes sense. I limited tuning to a certain number of combinations of spring tension and hammer throw and picked the lowest standard deviation combination so that might have minimized my hammer...

I think the regular BT65 caliber models (.177, .22, .25) are still coming in side-bolt action, but I'd imagine they'd all be converting over to side lever eventually. I was wondering why inventory was getting so spotty with the Carnivore... now we know why. If the .25 or .22 come in side lever...

Awesome to know you can break into the slug game with a cheaper rifle and that a choked barrel does not exclude you from using the projectiles effectively.

Shot string looks good. Check if the shroud is tightened, if it's loose it could cause the baffles to become misaligned and clip the pellets. If the shroud is tight then take it off and inspect the baffles for any damage which would indicate a misalignment and pellet clipping.
