Can't get the poly in the .551 O.D. so not an option but I asked Steve at Pomona once again and he recommended the standard rifling anyway. My best explanation of a poly rifling is a smoother, less sharp edges on the lands. Very similar to a Smooth Twist X. There are many different opinions out there of one versus the other but from what I have read there doesn't seem to be much of a noticeable difference between the two in how they shoot. It looks to me like the majority of the poly barrels are used in pistols. The technology has been around longer than standard rifling used today. As metallurgy and powders improved with time, the different rifling methods were developed to deal with the harder barrel steel and polygonal rifling was predominantly abandoned. Is there an advantage using a poly rifling in an airgun barrel? I'll leave that discussion to those who have used both, I have not. But I suspect the differences are minimal. I would guess that quality of the barrel would make more of a difference than type of rifling.
