The flatter trajectory on a .177 is only if the pellet is travelling faster.
It’s true that some .177 guns advertise max FPS that is close to or above the speed of sound but not with accuracy. The sweet spot for accuracy is usually below 1000fps and many (or most) modern 22 cal PCP guns are more than capable of firing commonly used pellets in the 900-1000 range.
The scenario where .177 can have an advantage is in FT or BR matches where there is a 20fpe or even a 12fpe limit. A .177 at 20fpe will shoot faster and flatter than a 20fpe 22 cal.
Outside of competitions with power limits, a 22 shot at the same speed as the .177 has the advantage.
