This is a general overview of what the maximum distances are for each kill zone size used:
3/8″ out to 15yd
1/2″ out to 25yd
3/4 out to 35yd
1″ out to 45yd
1 1/2″-2″ out to 55yd

Odd sizes like 5/8″ and 1 1/4″ ect are not often seen at matches unless you have a sadistic match director.  Also note there is a system in place called the Troyer Rating that determines how far each sized kill zone can be placed and still considered legal for a AAFTA sanctioned match.  I do not remember the equation.   There is a link on the AAFTA website but it seems to be down right now.

On a side note my practice lane has kill zones at ranges further than would be approved in a sanctioned match.  3/8″ at 18yd, 1/2″ at 30yd, 3/4″ at 40yd and so on. I beleive in the mantra aim small miss small.
