MROD barrel band touching shroud

I replaced my barrel recently and now the barrel band touches the shroud. what have you guys done to address this issue?

I rolled the barrel on a precision ground marble table and its a little crooked as was the old barrel, I guess its just crooked in a direction that adds up with other dimensional variations to make it touch on the top portion of the shroud now.

If is not hampering the accuracy. You could also carefully bend to barrel in the opposite direction. I have only read about it on the marauder airgun forum (I think thats where I read about it). I personally never had the issue with my old crossman barrel before I did the Marmot militia barrel upgrade. One method was taking the shroud off then making the adjustments with the barrel still on the gun. The other is simply take off the barrel and spend some time truing it up. The fellas who did this said that it did not effect accuracy other then having to re-zero. I have to admit though. If the shroud was making contact with the guard it would bother me and I would attempt to correct it.

Karlo,

I would try to adjust the shroud, along with the shroud mounting bushing near the breech. Sometimes all you have to do is loosen it up, rotate it a bit, and tighten it down again. Re install the shroud and band, and see if there is clearance. If sound is not an issue, I have my shroud completely removed from the gun, it definitely enhances the accuracy.

So far I have rotated the front barrel bushing in 90° increments with no change in clearence (i have the only concentric bushing ever manufactured I guess lol)

The shroud tightness does affect clearence though. The tighter the worse it gets.

Shooting without the shroud scares the animals so the general has restricted such activities.

Thank you for the input Tom! Much appreciated!

taildragger It's part # (item # ) 12 0-ring #2-022 problaby try lowes ,parkrose hardware, or any hardware store .Crosman has exploded view & parts list on their web site for all the marauders & other guns .You can get parts from them also if you are not aware . good luck Darell

I think Butch was referring to placing an O-ring that is larger than the stock one in that barrel band to fill the gap that is normally present, so it won't be free floating anymore.

Thank you for the input though!

mines snug ? if it doesn't work try wrapping electric tape with one wrap on shroud . It doesn't take much pressure with the shroud off to lower the barrel (center it to the barrel ban ) . If you grab it by the barrel you'll be sighting it in again anyways .Been there done that D.

Yah looks like ill be carefully bending the barrel down as I'd prefer it to free float in the band

Karlo,

It seems you fixed the problem, but before you tried to do something drastic, like bending the barrel, the solution that I had in mind was to rotate the piece that the shroud screws into. This sometimes has an effect on where the barrel sits. Being that you are hunting critters, I understand why you need the shroud.

so if you like the barrel and shroud to be free floating what is the barrel band for then

I would have to assume the barrel band was to help center the barrel assembly and to add strength to keep the barrel from being damage if unsupported

but I'm late to this party

The barrel band is there to prevent you from bending the barrel in half if you're a clutz like me and drop it.

When I had a Marauder I bought a barrel band somewhere that had a groove on the inside for using an oring if you wanted to. But as you said, that negates any benefit from a floating barrel, although i saw no difference anyway.

Not sure if your familiar with the marauder (see my pic posted above) but it has a barrel band that isn't touching the barrel so it can free float but still be there in case the barrel is deflected excessively.

To be honest I think this is the best kind of barrel band design out there... best of both worlds... except of course when you replace your barrel and the shroud ends up resting on the barrel band.

BTW there is an O-ring on the I.D. of the barrel band that cushions the shroud should it be deflected enough to touch

The rear barrel bushing is indexed to the barrel via a set screw & flat spot so it can only be tightened in one position.

Also I checked the rear bushing for concentricity and it was spot on!! I'm shocked! I only had to bend the crown end of the barrel down .070 to get it to clear the barrel band so I cant imagine it will have any i'll effects.
